Group,
Is the GP 30 frame / mechanism / motor the same as the GP 38-2?
Both of these had initial release in 2012 - 2013 ?
From what I have researched, the GP 38-2 shell was based on a previous Rouge run.
Primary difference in "price point" then is GP 30 shell was a totally new mold ?
Thank You,
Mr. Barlow

GP38 Frame is longer than GP30. Motor is different too. 38 uses screw and bushing to hold halves together, 30 uses clips. Looks like gears and trucks are same.
I'll let the experts chime in on history. I took some pics of an old 30 frame compared to the current style 38 frame. Keep in mind these may change when the new 38's come out.

As Timothy showed, the chassis are different. AZL believe is trying to keep dimensions as prototypical as possible in length and width. The GP30s are shorter locos than the GP38s and AZL reprinted that. But that is not the only difference. The GP38 is truly a one size fits all loco. The shell was originally developed by Rogue. But it has been enhanced since including upgraded fan details and handrails. The GP30 on the other hand is one that does include prototype specific details. One detail easy to spot is those locos with dynamic brakes versus those without. Here is the NYC version without the dynamic brake Here is the BNSF version with the dynamic brake Also note the horns. The NYC has a single horn on each side of the cab. the BNSF has a horn cluster between the fans. It is these type of details that AZL is known for. It does increase the cost of runs, but it also defines the quality AZL is striving for.

Good info to know, thanks. Now if AZL would make the Milwaukee Road version of the GP30 with the AAR trucks!
