April 2020 New Releases Part 1

Illinois Central “Panama Limited” - Lightweight Passenger Cars!

The Panama Limited was the Illinois Central’s flagship passenger train operating from Chicago to New Orleans. Originally an all Pullman train, the IC would add diners and coaches to build out the train that is represented. The dome cars were purchased from the Missouri Pacific. The Panama Limited would run until Amtrak took over in 1971. Amtrak would restored the name and retained the overnight schedule. It continues to be operated by Amtrak today under the name.

On a personal note, my Aunt Lillian lived in Hazelhurst, Mississippi along the IC mainline (on the "good" side of the tracks) so it was fun for me to find that the IC used a 4-4-2 sleeper on the Panama Limited called the "HAZELHURST" and it did indeed pass through it's namesake town.

I recently acquired a set of Illinois Central passenger cars and I find that they run well and look very good. However, the RPO and the BAGGAGE cars tend to derail on curves. I believe this is because the trucks, on both ends, encounter ladders that impede their rotation. The coaches and sleepers have only the ladders at the very end of the car whereas the RPO and BAG have two ladders at both ends of the car. One solution would be to remove the offending ladder. Perhaps there is another, less offensive soultion. Any ideas? THANKS.....and the cars are beautiful and an excellent production of AZL.
