For the record, the MAXI-Is are AZL's 25 body style of revenue freight cars... cabooses not included!!! If we add in MTL (42), the little guys (14) passenger (32) and throw out the duplicates and non-revenue (caboose, baggage) the scale has broken 100 (125 by my count). Looks like a real modeling scale to me.

That was fast! They look great, and I appreciate the Ztrack video demonstrating the operation of the car, especially showing what radii they can handle. Are the containers going to be available at a later date, or soon to follow with each car release? I'm curious if they're stateside yet. Looking forward to more paint schemes!

Jason,
The new Maxis look great, but I wish they'd reissue the NSC cars with 53' wells.
If you look at the Ztrack website, there are numerous containers already available for these well cars. They are made by MCZ Models and Rokuhan. MCZ Models has hi-cube (9.5' hi) 40' and 53' corrugated dry goods containers (many shippers), plus hi-cube 40' reefers (the only ones available in Z, 4 shippers so far). All are injection molded with fine pad printing and come with an etched brass bottom to facilitate stacking (magnetic or temporary adhesive) on moving trains. MCZ also makes 20' liquid containers, but Ztrack doesn't carry them. Rokuhan has beautiful standard (8.5' hi) 20' and 40' corrugated dry goods containers, injection molded with fine pad printing. If you want a bottom for the Rokuhan, you make your own. Both Rokuhan and MCZ Models are prototypically accurate. If you are into very early intermodal, possibly it's more prototypical to go with the Rokuhan standard (8.5' hi) containers. Rokuhan are also the only 20' containers available in Z. The hi-cube containers are replacing the standard containers in international commerce, which means the standard containers are disappearing rapidly, if not gone completely, in today's intermodal traffic. The 53' containers have always been hi-cube and are mostly confined to N. America. They do not move in marine transport except on coastal shipping and in the Caribbean.

Thanks for the information Malcolm. For some reason I never realized that MCZ offers 40' corrugated high cube containers, even after eyeing up your 53' containers for some time. I am interested in modern intermodal, so they would be a great fit for me. Curiously, AZL initially announced their own 40' corrugated containers along with the MAXI-I's, and unless those were just undec MCZ containers riding in the preproduction samples, they were tooled and had test shots. I was actually surprised, though pleasantly so, to see the cars being offered sans containers. I assume that all of the decoration they require is taking longer than anticipated, and they will be available separately at a later date, but there has been no word from AZL as of yet. Again, thanks for your remarks.

Jason,
I tried to be as unbiased as possible. The Rokuhan containers are excellent, but are all standard, no hi-cube. I think the MCZ etched bottoms add value for moving my containers stacked on trains, although they add to the cost. The AZL containers are beautifully painted, but the ones offered that I have seen so far are not corrugated. That means that some of the slick side AZL containers are completely unprototypical, because some of the paint jobs have only appeared on corrugated containers. The slick side dry good containers have almost completely vanished, in part because they could not absorb as much damage as corrugated dry good containers and have been taken out of service or scrapped. Reefers have smooth sides to accommodate insulation, but I suspect that they are corrugated underneath the insulation.
Rob's website has a category "containers". However, it only has Rokuhan containers there, very misleading! I have requested that he add mine to that category to avoid misleading people. That will be changed soon, hopefully.
