Your work is great and represents Arizona well. One little detail, in the era you’re modeling, the drug stores would have been CVS didn’t buy Longs until 2008

Until the late 90s drug stores were more regional. Longs was western states and Hawaii. I mention them because they were headquartered where I grew up. Another possibly I can think of is Rexall, which Miller Engineering has modeled a z scale light-up sign.

I just discovered this layout, really nice work! I am just starting a small layout that will be AZ based and would like to learn about your desert scenery methods. All of my layouts have always been based on areas in the Northeast US, so desert scenery is new to me. I have made numerous trips to AZ and have tons of photos to use as a guide.
I look forward to watching all of your videos!

hello Stevew
I also use a lot of photos from AZ landscape
it is very simple indeed all the rocks are made with carved extruded styrene ( orange or pink stuff) then I peint a base color (beige), then orange, red, yellow and mix of these colors. then black, brown washes, then dry brushing with all this type of colors.
if you are not happy, just ad a new paint color
Nothing revolutionnary
out of the rocks (i also use styrène and filler for the gaps, but you can use plaster, or any device)
on the fresh paint, I spread white sand (the paint glue it, and give a the color) may be some mix of water glue and dishwashing liquid , to glue down correctly when dry, some brown red washes on places where I want that color.
after just some material for the bushes and dry grass (i have not tried static grass)
the paint and sand is from a Do it yourself store (very cheap)
I hope it could help

Thank you so much for the photos and description of your techniques! You have given me a lot of inspiration and great ideas for my layout.

Carving the 'Red Rocks' is tedious but rewarding when they are colored. I was fortunate to get a 2'x8' 2 inch thick XPS sheet that had a 'stress chunk' broken off, to start. I used a needle file to enhance some cracks and erosion, but nothing compares to all that 'Red Rocks' work. I've watched a lot of vidz and looked at magazines for techniques from knives, knives, knives; various lengths of hot wires pressed in frequent, Fein vibration saws, etc. I used water-based 'Knock Down' to build up and fill in. Normally sprayed on walls to create texture before paining, just spray in a metat bowl and scoop. BTW: my Uncle started the Longs drug stores.
