October 2019 New Releases

Pullman & Union Pacific (Overland) - Lightweight Passenger Cars!

AZL has released thirteen sleepers for the Pullman Company. In addition, a single mail car for the Union Pacific is part of this release. The cars are lettered for Pullman as well as the ‘Overland’.

The Overland route was a passenger train operated by the Union Pacific. Operation began in 1869 and continued until 1963. In it’s heyday, the route ran between Chicago and San Francisco. The line followed the original path of the first transcendental railroad. It made stops in cities such as Salt Lake City, Ogden, Reno and Sacramento.

Gee I haven't paid off the CZ set yet.

I'll want the cars to built the pre-1950 Overland, they will go well with the cab forward. But I do have a couple of questions:

Will we see any additional car types in the Overland scheme?

Where do the 73101 cars fit in? They appear to have been used for Erie RR service.

Mark, the 73101 are not associated with the Overlands. They are part of the general Pullman release. The theme this month was Pullman and the Overland since they really did go well together... the 73101s being the exception.

For those of you with the UP Gray Goose Challenger... these cars go perfect with that loco!

Now, that is a rare one indeed! I wonder how many of those locos are still in the collection of some lucky guys.

However, I own the cab forward. Great to know that these cars can be a fine match for the ugly one

for anyone interested.

As you can see the Overland was a mix of lightweight and heavyweight cars, most, but not all in TTG and most, but not all with the "overland" letter board. Pullman records indicate the American Forum car was changed to SP9152 in 1950 so I think the coach yard 1946 consist works well with this release.

Now you've got me interested in the pre-1950 Overland. I'm thinking it would make an interesting winter project. However knowing RobA's tendency to anticipate my winter projects, I wondering if I might be spinning my wheels building a couple of Overland LW coaches and an observation car?

Just as plain as the Pullman Heavyweights!

All three Pullman Green Cars (American Liberty / Unity / Way) were Built on June 2, 1942, and used in Pullman pool service - including war time assignment to the Overland route. They were sold to the Erie on January 1, 1946, retaining their Pullman Green paint until 1954 / 1955 when they were repainted in Erie livery.

Yes I agree the Gray paint Challenger would look great. But in private communications to me, the historical accuracy of this statement was questioned. I had the chance to research this over the weekend and for the historically obsessed (like myself) here's what I've found.

The two-tone grey scheme started in 1946 and was applied to locomotives assigned to overnight passenger service, mainly 4-8-2 and 4-8-4 locomotives. There is ample evidence for these locomotives on the Overland and several other trains.

In December of that year, UP instructed the Portland shops to paint a Challenger in the two-tone scheme. They chose to use the Armour yellow striping on the locomotive instead of the silver-grey used on the other types. This became the standard for Challengers assigned to the NW routes (Green River - Seattle/Portland). I can find no evidence of regular operation of these Challengers outside the region. By 1949 some these locomotives were repainted black. 3977 could be found on the Ogden-LA route and 3981 on the Overland route.

For the really obsessed, Utahrails.net has a considerable discussion on the paint scheme in general and specially the Challengers:

I've verified enough of the material on these pages with print sources to feel comfortable with their accuracy.

So while the locos would look great with the Overland cars both in TTG and Armour yellow, the evidence is that it would be an unlikely pairing. If someone has additional information, I'd like to hear about it.

Of course if this this a hint that we might be seeing a 4-8-X locomotive in Z, I'm all for it!
