September 2019 New Releases Part 1

1952 California Zephyrs!

AZL is proud to offer the legendary California Zephyr operated jointly by the CB&Q, D&RGW and WP between Chicago and Oakland. Scaling both the Rockies and the Sierras it was the most scenic train route in North America. The CZ travelled 2,438 miles starting in 1949 until 1971 when Amtrak took over. All passenger cars were made by Budd. Originally a 10 car consist in 1951, but increased to 11 in 1952. AZL also offers the single PRR car that ran weekly as a through service to and from New York City. The CZ railroads ordered 6 complete sets and AZL have made 4! All three railroads used EMD F3s as pulling power which AZL also offers separately. The correct F3 assignments were: CB&Q A-B-A, D&RGW A-B-B-A and WP A-B-B.

AZL has released two Zephyr sets. The sets and car configurations are as follows. It is important to note that the listing is in order on how the cars would have appeared in the train. The listings are road name, road number, car name and car type:

As an add on car, AZL is offering the single PRR car number 8449 ‘Silver Rapids’ 10-6 sleeper. The PRR operated this car out of New York City. It would be connected to the west bound Zephyrs in Chicago.

EMD F3 Sets – California Zephyr Service

AZL has releases EMD F3 sets for the Burlington (CB&Q), D&RGW and the Western Pacific. The following locomotives are now available:

These look very nice. Not something I need--already got my CZ via Superliners, thanks also to AZL--but this release has to be great for Z overall with its ability to draw more eyes on Z-scale.

Side benefit...half of the Z-scalers will be broke, so maybe I can win some good deals on eBay for a few months!!!

But then again, I fear Maxi-I's will be here before we know it...I better save my ~~pennies~~ hundred dollar bills.

After spending some time reviewing the images and videos, I have to say I'm very much impressed with this offering. The Budd car designs appear to be spot on. The mistakes made by larger manufacturers in larger scales have been avoided. Until I get the sets in hand, the only criticism I can dredge up is that the lead coupler on the WP F3As should be painted silver:

One question along this line: has AZL provided the coupler clam shell for the CB&Q F3As? In the 1952 era, they generally ran the CZ with the coupler enclosed:

Both are of rather limited importance. The former can be resolved with a drop (literally) of paint, and the later about 15 minutes of whittling a piece of styrene.

A couple of typos (I hope) here. The WP Silver Crescent should be #881. As a quick sanity check, WP cars were numbered in the 800 series with the ten's digit representing the car style as listed in standard operating order. SO the car range from 80x for baggage to 88x for the observation. I think Hans meant to say DRGW and not WP for the Silver Sky.

Overall I can hardly wait.

Yes, drawbars are included. Two are included in the three loco sets. Also the optional truck with coupler is in the packaging. Alll locos are powered, the A and B units in the sets. The F3s are DCC ready and do use AZL's standard PCB. The front coupler is easily removed from the pilot. There is a small hole, but it can easily be filled.

So if you're layout is set around this area you now have an excuse to buy these. On this detour, the train would've been pulled by D&RGW F3's.

Actually the CZ ran on a number of tracks that would not have been expected:

When the Feather River Canyon was closed due to snow, the train would be rerouted between Sacramento CA and Reno NV on the SP route through Donner Pass. In that era, the clearance along the route was still much as built in the 19th century and the CZ dome cars had only 6 inches of clearance. The train was required to run at 25MPH with no occupants in the domes. FYI the SP dome car run on the route, were built in-house and were 8 inches shorter.

WP and SP shared tracks in Nevada, so an east-bound train would run on SP tracks and west-bound WP.

Perhaps the most interesting rerouting of the CZ happened in 1955,a bit later than the era AZL has modeled.
Due to a derailment in Sulphur NV, the train rerouted over the AT&SF from Stockton CA through the Tehachapi Pass and back up to Salt Lake City. I'm not aware of the locomotives used, but I assume an AT&SF F or GP unit lead the way.

Looks a bit like my old layout at times.

Just a quick update. The first shipment of sets and locos are going out tomorrow! More to follow in the next few days. Our plan is to have all direct customer and dealers orders in the mail by the weekend.
