I measured these things without a "Z-gauge", only with a caliper. In the past, I noticed issues with my GP9 (modified GP35) on Rokuhan turnouts (it lifted when running over the turnout in deviant position) ; this was related with the fact that both sides of the movable part are straight, so the width can decrease to 6.2 mm. Mr. Marsilius, my German dealer for MTL, modified the axles, decreasing the "external width" (thanks to him again ! ), now the loco runs over the turnouts. But I noticed some more "shaking" than with AZL. Now I measured the thickness of the flanges : they are slightly more than 0.3 mm on AZL, but about 0.5 mm on my MTL, so I wonder if the inner side of the wheel can scrub with ... the guard rails ? I sanded slightly the guard rails, it seems to make some improvement, but my MTL is still shaking more than AZL. Did anybody notice the same thing ? Or is it related with some uneveness in the rotating of the motor at slow speed (contact problems ? ). On the other side, I noticed that some shaking and rolling on turnouts cannot be avoided (and is unfortunately prototypical : all people standing when train is running into he station can notice it ... even in big stations : Strasbourg in France). And look at the video with the AZL SOO GP 30 (formerly included into the AZL site), at 1:30 to 1:45. So I think I will live with it ...

When I looked across the tops of the rails (who ever gets down low and does this, *especially* when laying track ?? ). There were very noticeable heights between the frog, points and stock rails. It really was not pretty and I would suspect that might be what you notice too.
Roll a 2 axle märklin flat car across all of you tracks. Use a 2 finger technique (like a 'peace' sign) and you can easily feel the quality of the track surface.

Thanks for the answer ... The issue with the height of the frog is well known for Rokuhan (and Märklin too ! ) ; but I think it cannot be solved, without modifying completely (and perhaps destroying) the turnouts ; I have already sanded some asperities ... and superglued "down" some rail joiners at one end (especially at the short sections of rails of the turnouts) ; but I cannot understand the noticeable difference between the behaviour of AZL and MTL (and I must admit a slighter difference between some AZL's, too). I put a ruler over the rails, in fact I saw some differences in height with the frog ; but, more important : on some turnouts, when in deviant position, the movable part can "toggle" and go down on the external side, so a difference in height appears when a loco runs over it (maybe some locos are heavier than others ? ). And with Rokuhan a difference in height appears at some track insulators, too ... even if I superglue the end of the rails. Besides that, I noticed that the MTL GP9 "rolled" more in one direction at slow speed, even when it doesn't run over turnouts (I decided it would be "backwards" when I mounted the shell). Finally, when I saw the GP30-SOO video (on a club's layout ! ), I think that if a club can live with that issue, I will too ... It is nothing in comparison with the so-called "flex" track by Märklin, where ties broke very easily when I tried to put nails into the holes ; and please, don't say again that I should glue my tracks : with screws I can remove them again, especially if I must replace or repair a turnout (look at the last post in "Parameters for Rokuhan turnouts") : Murphy is never asleep ...
