I just received a new MTL SD-40 from the new production run and the thing reacts crazy to my rokuhan rc02 controller. At barely 1/8 throttle this thing is already flying. It goes from no movement to damn near wot with only an 1/8 of an inch of controller movement. I know the mtls run quicker but all of my 10 azl locos run great and I have 2 MTL gp9s that run faster but are FAR more controllable. We got this loco for switching work and it's proving almost impossible for slow speed operation. Any ideas?

Received mine today but haven’t run it yet. I’ll try it tomorrow & let you know. I’ll be running with a Marklin transformer.

Is the motor of the new SD40s still a Maxon, as it was in former models?

Okay, my problem is just the opposite. Apply power, the lights come on but the loco just sits there. Goose it a bit and it takes off like gang busters, then stops dead again. This happens over & over.
I’ve cleaned the track & my other AZLs & MTLs run just fine. Considering the long wait, what a disappointment! Deb

Is the motor of the new SD40s still a Maxon, as it was in former models? From a post aloooong time ago it was said the internals were the same but seeing as there is a good chance this is going back I am not going to pull the shell to find out. Disappointed here as well. Oh well win some lose some.

Has the loco had any run time at all? I would let it run a bit..."stretch its legs"..."burn in"...and then re-assess.
And then obviously the next answer for adjusting the speed table if you want to use it for a switcher is....DCC decoder.
Or, maybe sending it back is necessary. It happens.

Tried to get an RA to send it back but all I received were several tips on how to fix it. Really? ?

Tried to get an RA to send it back but all I received were several tips on how to fix it. Really? ? What tips did you get? Mine is acting similar to yours. I'm running a 4x6 layout with 220 curves and this thing just has no guts at low throttle. It is actually almost moving at 0 throttle (if you nudge it it will move) and it starts flying unloaded at 1/8 throttle yet at that setting it bogs down pulling 6 cars through a 220 curve. Yet if you throttle it up to 50-60 scale mph it runs like a champ. Wierdest thing I've seen. I've left emails for Joe Damato from MTL but haven't heard back. The dealer I bought it from more or less said he tests his units before shipping and it was fine, go pound sand. Shoulda gone with my gut and stuck with azl. I might ride over to my local store mbklien as I see they have them in stock now and ask if they will test run a unit for me. Frustrating. Keep me posted on your luck and good luck!

They have a Can motor. You should post on TrainBoard (http://www.trainboard.com/highball/index.php?forums/z-scale) and Z-scale on Groups.io (where Yahoo Group Z_scale moved to last month: groups.io/g/z-scale). If you were already a member of Yahoo Groups Z_Scale group, then your User name and Password are *the same* on Groups.io

I was told that the locomotive was probably shaken hard during shipment (really???) and that the drive shaft & contact points were no longer aligned & I should stop the loco on end to reposition. I don’t think so! I could also remove the shell & see what may be hung up. No!
Like you I think I’m out big bucks.

Disappointing to see the re-release from MTL is not as it should be, especially it was delayed because of some issues... Nevertheless, it sounds like some contact problem. Nothing limited to MTL, 80% of AZL locos I receive are not working out of the box, most times the circuit board is dislodged or has moved. So rough transport can be a factor apart from poor design and quality assurance, and when you see how parcels are treated in the whole logistics chain its no surprise. I would simply lift the shell on an investment of 2 toothpicks and have a look underneath. Might be an easy fix. Otherwise return to point of sales, dealer can apply the pressure to get things sorted out.

Thanks, Gerd. Guess I’ll open it up because the dealer tells me no refund on a pre-ordered loco. This will be my last! Deb

Wow, the dealer would definitely have a problem with consumer law in down under

Thanks, Gerd. Guess I’ll open it up because the dealer tells me no refund on a pre-ordered loco. This will be my last! Deb I have a feeling we were dealing with the same place. I will probably pull my shell tonight. I've become pretty adept at rebuilding these little guys. Will let you know if I see anything wonky in mine that jumps out or if I ever hear back from MTL.

Joe from MTL got back to me and advised sending mine in. Neverland, try emailing him direct describing your issue and see what he says.
