Hi,
I'm doing my second layout, its a long 26 foot layout in the garage- I purchased some cork board and want to cut out stips to make the track bed. Can someone tell me what is the width of a single track bed and a double track bed dimensions? very much appreciated. Cheers-

Hi, welcome to the forum.
If you are making a perpendicular cut, you need 12-13mm (depending on the manufacturer) to support the ties for a single track. Add the typical 25mm c-c track spacing and you're looking at 37-38mm for a double track. This assumes you plan of creating the roadbed edge slope with ballast. If you plan on cutting the cork at an angle (I use 45²) the base can be anywhere from 14mm to 22mm depending on the era you're modeling.
Hope this helps,
Mark

Found this post and was wondering; what width would be most prototypical for Era V? Hi Tiest, Era V in Marklin's terms is 1990-2006. Assuming you are talking about North American prototype, this would be the era where railroads began to expand the doubletrack spacing from 13ft to 25ft for track availability/continuity reasons. At 13ft if maintenance is needed on one track, both have to be taken out of service or at least restrictions placed that impede operations. At 25ft, maintenance can happen while the adjacent track remains in service. (I'm likely oversimplifying this but that is the basic idea) This has been done mostly on new construction or for major reconstruction, so the 13ft spacing is largely still the norm.

Very helpful! That puts road bed size to 1.8mm give or take. Thank you! Tiest
