Getting back to fright cars...
Alberich,
I see MTL is offering NYC blue double door box car, 506 00 351 506 00 352 that fits your era and might make a good addition to your layout.

Thank You Mark, but ... I have already bought it , and the 548 00 032 (NYC yellow-silver mechanical reefer) too ... And I changed the wheels to those made by "Uncle Will" (FT). Excepted for the NH-GP9, my freight locos are all NYC and so not very "colourful" (GP7, GP9, F3 A+B and now GP30) : I wanna counterbalance this with the freight cars, as long as they are available ... My "box car train" can be made of two 40' and three 50', and one caboose, according to the projected freight track length along the shed ; some "kitbashing" will be necessary for the "platform", 32cm. I decided that the "year" would be 1964, for the "Susie" cars and the GP30.

CP does NOT own a controlling interest in UP.
And Micro-Trains is not discontinuing Z-Scale.

In some cases like the Pacific Fruit Express, several roads would do a joint operation with a fleet of cars owned between them. You might want to look up the "Salad Bowl Express". Unfortunately there are no "colourful" PFE reefers suitable for the year 1964, the wooden cars were (as I read) already wrecked ... As I wrote, I have already bought the NYC reefers (but they aren't in PFE scheme) ! Or are some cars of the colourful "Baby Ruth" or "Heinz" series suitable for 1964 ? Nothing is indicated (on various pages) for the years they were in service, only informations about the company !

Alberich, I've found the PFE stories are rather mixed and not sure what to take as fact. The data MTL has on their 40 foot refers (518 00 0031/32)is that they were serviced in 1963. I personally have a memory of a PFE train in Truckee, CA in the summer of 1964. An interesting timeline for your era: www.bluford-shops.com/bluford_93_025.htmsuggests half of the cars where still running in 1970. As for the "Baby Ruth" and "Heinz" series, I don't recall ever seeing anything like them on the roads, and my railroad memories go back to 1958. The markings, or rather lack of markings, on the Heinz car suggests they weren't run in the modern era or exchanged between roads. I have a "Baby Ruth". I'll have to check the markings on it to see where it fits in. Mark

Thanks Mark ...
In fact, the MTL 518 00 0031/32 look fine, and despite of the fact that they ran rather in the Middle West, they could perhaps be used as "exchange/interchange" cars ; as I wote in a former topic, I wanna compensate the rather "sad" colours of NYC locos with more colourful cars. I shall consider the possibility ...
PS : I would be happy if AZL could perhaps take a NH-freight loco (FA ? ) into their program, something "NH-like" was announced a few months ago ! The (MTL) GP9 is the one and only NH loco (excepted the Budd's, but the logo is rather small) that I have in my roster !

The MTL 548 series units might be another possibility.

As I wrote I have already bought the NYC version ... It's not obvious if the paint scheme of the PFE isn't from the 70's (Source : ZScaleMonster) ! Unfortunately the WFE is sold out ...

Now that they have the trucks, I.E. the AAR type trucks like on the GP30's, all they need is the shell now! FA's, GE's, etc.

And now another question, related to the former question about the freight cars : could in some cases the railroads exchange the CABOOSES, too ? i.e. could a caboose stay at the rear of a freight train, when this was taken over by another railroad ? Or did the caboose always fit with the locomotive ? I don't have any NH caboose to use with my NH-GP9 : is it "artistic freedom" if I pull a NYC or Reading caboose (Märklin or MTL) ? Maybe it's already that if I run NH and NYC trains on the same track ; however, I think that almost nobody more knows about "trackage rights" of NH and NYC in 1964, so I think I can live with this.
PS : to Mark, about "billboard cars" (Baby Ruth, Heinz), question from March (!) : it seems that this practice stopped in 1937 : see here under the picture of the freight car.

Since the cabooses were effectively the branch office for the railroad, I suspect exchanging cabooses was extremely rare. I know of roads leasing or buying a caboose from a neighboring railroad and patching out the original road name and markings...just a dab of paint in Z. I'm also aware of instances when a train was forced to use another railroad's track, that train to have the track owner's locomotive and/or caboose be added to the train. As for the "billboard cars", I have reservations about the ICC restriction referred to on the page. As we know the "State of Maine" was running well after 1937. Then you've got the WP Feather River cars: www.zscalemonster.com/mt/40boxcar/500-00-080.jpgthe "Santa Fe all the way" and the UP route cars: www.zscalemonster.com/mt/50boxcar/506-00-080.jpgwww.zscalemonster.com/mt/50boxcar/506-00-500.jpgand all of these cars were running into the 1970s. I'd call them all billboards. Mark

Hear, hear!
If it looks good, run it. There's too much good stuff out there and I don't really like to be tied down to a particular livery, location, or even time period. While some may like modeling specifics, don't get so caught up in the details if it the details get in the way of you enjoying your hobby. Some people like simulating, replicating, or even honoring certain details. Others just want to see trains run.
There was an old commercial by a baseball player about him not choosing a prestige "name" car. His reply was "The only person you really have to impress - is yourself".
So set up your little rail empire however you want and enjoy it to the max.
Now back to the regularly scheduled thread.
