No. They did not. Funny, was just thinking about these cars this morning. I spoke to an IMRC rep at the OKC Train Show two years ago and asked about them. He not so politely said no. He seemed to take the opportunity to chastise the z-scale community as a whole for the failed sales of the cylindrical hoppers, and basically stated they would never do anything in Z again. I don't know how much of that was trying to overstate his point versus reality, but he left little to the imagination. Personally these cars are in my top 5 of most wanted Z items and I think at some point I'll campaign for IMRC to move forward with them. I will probably lobby with them next year either at the Plano show in January or OKC a year from now. (I'm unable to go to OKC this year due to a business trip) I think that having the Atlas track, plus the laundry list of AZL items that have been released since the IMRC Cylindricals, should give them a better feeling that Z is building a little momentum. This would probably be the best angle to take with regards to nudging them back to Z, notwithstanding a big fat binder full of preorders for them.

The IM cylindrical are really nice cars. But the IM approach to marketing these cars really didn't fit well with Z. By asking for pre-orders then releasing all at once, the market became instantly flooded. Then after the initial excitement, sales really dropped. The approach AZL, MTL and Full Throttle have with monthly releases really works better for the Z scale market. I think IM would have seen stronger sales with that approach. IM really never got Z scale. Their challenges as the Rokuhan distributor also showed that they had not done their research into the Z market. The rules are different. Not knocking IM, but there is a reason why Rokuhan is now working with us (Ztrack). We understand the market and what it takes to succeed. I do think it is a shame IM backed out of their car releases. I was very excited to have another player in the market. Diversity is a good thing! I am very happy we have Atlas now. BTW we still have IM cylindrical in stock if anyone is interested. www.ztrackcenter.com/intermountain-hopperRob

IMRC's approach to marketing across the board has been flawed for the past 5-6 years. In N, they started this shotgun scheme whereby instead of announcing 4-6 schemes at a time, they would announce 10-12 at a time. The problem this created is that they "split the votes" so to speak. So none of the schemes got enough interest, and they would cancel most of the run. They would end up with almost the same number of models to make, (yet still a little short) but in the process pissed off about 75% of their customers whose orders got cancelled. (and schemes that normally would have sold well) Just not a good way of doing things.
It seemed like they had the tooling done or almost done for the reefers. So maybe they can be coaxed into it. I know a couple of the IMRC guys so I'll try to find out more.
I already have more of the cyclindricals than I really wanted....I bought one for $10, and had two given to me....one from a shop on eBay that I bought some other stuff from, and one was a guy I sold a bunch on N too and he bought a lot of N from someone else that had the one Z car mixed in. He knew I had moved to Z so he just sent it to me since I'd treated him to some good deals on my N stuff.

Funny this topic should come up because I too have been the recipient of some nasty chastising from an IM rep at our local train show. I agree that their marketing strategy is seriously flawed, but unless and until there are some definitive changes made at IM, nothing will change, and they will never go back to producing Z products.

I agree that their marketing strategy is seriously flawed, but unless and until there are some definitive changes made at IM, nothing will change, and they will never go back to producing Z products. This from the guy who insisted Micro-Trains was exiting Z-scale....but I digress. I think we established that they currently have a bad taste in their mouth about Z, so yeah it will take something to change. But, it can't hurt for us to voice encouragement to them (even in the face of their defensive posture) to reconsider Z and at least move forward with their second project. Nobody ever said model railroad companies are infused with great businesspersons, nor do they have to be. Almost all companies, regardless of size, has a large component of "labor of love" involved, and someone there is obviously disappointed in things. Once time has healed those wounds, maybe they'll be willing to jump back in.
