I found this image on Railpictures.net the other day. What a classic photo of a NYC RDC. What is very striking is the woodside caboose and outside braced boxcar visible in the background. The photo was taken in July of 1960. It really shows the length of time the outside braced cars ran. I mention this since AZL has just released these cars. Really, you can run them with your Mikados all of they way through your F3s and even your early SD units! Here is more information on the photo: www.railpictures.net/photo/627472/The photographer has been posting some really interesting images from Mackinaw City Michigan from this period. I didn't realize the NYC was so involved with Michigan. Take a look at some of his other photos. You will see what I mean. Rob

In doing a quick lookup of the GP7 timeframe, they were made from 1949 to 1954 so the outside braced cars should work well with that as well.

Nice pic.
The only production "SD" in Z that would suffice would be the AZL SD45 and even that is pushing it. The outside braced boxcars really began waning in the late 50's. Some did make it into the late 60's and even early 70's but that would be rare revenue service or MOW.
SD45's began service in 1965, and any other SD's I'm aware of in Z are SD40-2 variants AZL did in brass (and MTL in plastic) and they came along in 1972 or later. The SD-like wheel arrangement on the F45 (1968) would also qualify alongside the SD45. (and of course tons of other earlier diesels like the GP7's and any E/F-unit.)

Might be a good reason to make some SD7s and SD9s. Love the boxcars.
