Hi, I would agree with Dazed's assessment of the GP-38. I have six of these from that run and two of them had broken chasisses so it cost me a lot of money to replace them and that should not have been the case. If someone sells a defective product it should be replaced at no cost to the customer afterall we spent a lot buying it in the first place.
More recently (Jan. 14, 2023) I purchased a new ES44 two days later (Jan. 16) it stopped running. I've sent AZL two e-mails regarding this and have received no reply so far. I don't think returning it to the store is going to be an option since it's closing it's doors in May.

Hi, just for the record, I have experienced this problem with some of my rolling stock too. I've experienced it with both AZL and MTL couplers. I don't think I've experienced it with the Bowser couplers used by Full Throttle. I don't have any curved track tighter than 220mm and no inclines. With some of the AZL couplers I've noticed the opening seems a little larger than normal. Also my layout is quite small so no really long trains. With the MTL couplers I notice the body mount couplers are prone to this if pushed backwards through curved track. Sometimes turning the car around or repositioning it solves the problem and sometimes I replace the offending truck/coupler.

To Chuckb,
Did your RDC ever quiet down on its own?

Hi, thanks for the reply. Since no Canadian road names are listed in the planned first release of these I was just wondering if there ever will be.

Hi, CN and CP both used the four axle versions of the PA and PB units and they passed to VIA Rail later. Are any of these being planned?

I agree with Rob on the Rokuhan track being a superior system. They have the biggest selection of track types for Z-scale and it is virtually plug and play.

I find the removal of the shell from most of the diesel engines is fairly simple and easy. However, is the fuel tank of the E8 and P42 held on with an adhesive? By the way, I like the way the pilot is mounted on the P42 and the free swinging coupler. I wish the E8 and F3 were done the same way. Now how the devil do I get the shell off the steam engine?

Hi, re: Shapeways pricing, I mostly collect aircraft and ship models from them. I have found the prices can vary quite a bit between different model makers for the same material and sometimes for the same scale and model! Sometimes the more expensive model actually has less detail! Believe it or not I actually came across one model that was offered in that new PA12 plastic that cost more than the Smooth Fine Detail version!!!!!

Hi, does anyone out there know how to remove the shell from the AZL Mikado? I have one that's making a terrible noise and I'm hoping that a spot of lube will cure the problem (it has for some of my other locos making a similar noise) but I can't figure out how to get the shell off.

I've also had issues with locos running faster in one direction than the other, I've never figured out why. With some of the GP38s I have they also have fluctuating speed issues (run slow then speed up and vise versa) never been able to figure this one out either.

I believe the PA-1/PB-1 were six axle versions of these locos? I would really like the four axle versions since CN & CP used these. CN tested a PA-1/PB-1 four unit combo in 1950 but didn't buy them it seems they preferred the E7/E8 instead. Some decent F7's would be nice but I believe AZL is already planning some? The MTL F7 is disappointing with no mechanical upgrades and often don't run very well without some tinkering.

I recently purchased a Canadian Pacific E8 it looks great and runs good. I am disappointed in a couple of things however:
1) The lack of a B-unit for this version.
2) Having to remove the pilot to double-head these engines. Perhaps AZL could consider an after market slotted pilot for these engines for those of us that don't mind this? Just a thought.
I hope a CN version will also be done.

Z-Scale Monster is also accepting pre-orders for the P-42 etc. I would also like some VIA Rail cars to go with these. CP Rail had some Superliners? I never knew that before!

I do hope the next run of GP30's will include Canadian Pacific and Burlington Northern ones! I was surprised to here about the "crunchy chassis" problem with the GP38's, thankfully I haven't had this problem with any of mine but I don't install DCC in my locos either.

Hi, I think it's a shame an alternate pilot wasn't included with the optional truck for the E8. Personally I think an alternate pilot that allows a truck mounted coupler freedom of movement looks better than no pilot at all. MTL's F7 is like that and it seems to allow sufficient movement of he coupler.
