I just finished building the free Archistories garage kit that came in my Ztrack magazine. I painted the interior. I painted the garden tools and installed them on an inside wall. I built a custom workbench and installed it on the inside wall with the window and door. I opened the front doors so the inside could be seen. There are several AlaskaRR YouTube videos that have attracted quite a following. Only natural it has caught the eye of Z scalers.

I keep my 2’ x 4’ layout covered with a space blanket when I’m not running. It goes a long way towards keeping dust off your layout & your tracks.
I clean my tracks before each run using isopropyl alcohol & cotton swabs. It’s amazing how much dirt you will pick up even after a few days not running. I just use alcohol to clean my loco & car wheels, again using a cotton swab or packaged wipe. But it’s the racks that must be kept clean.

How often do you clean your tracks and wheels?

Karin’s structures were the best! I have a tote full of partial kits she sent me after she shuttered her business. I have cobbled together a few one-offs for my Z village.

You’re right about a proper layout display. I once belonged to a local train club whose members teased me to no end. Not only was I the only female train modeler but the lone Z scaler. The most repeated comment was the size diminished the details. So I began creating mini vignettes on which to display my pieces during our monthly contests. At the end of 2018, I had scored more contest points than all the others put together. The prize? 2 prime rib dinners at our annual Christmas dinner!

]To me, z scale sucked when everything was in briefcases.
I agree! Saw a suitcase layout at Train Day in Ashland, VA a few years ago & the guy was running a single Marklin loco on it so fast it looked like a whirling dervish! Passerbys were laughing. He made Z scale look like a toy.

In about 2 months, when the layout will be "almost" finished ... The "upper" part is OK, the carnival too, I will begin working on my "construction company" and then fix the buildings in the town ; and then put more than 100 vehicles and 500 figures ! 500??? The world is already over populated! 🤣

Good point— sitting figures are easy to come by. Seated on the ground is more difficult.

If it’s too vintage for your layout, turn one of the coaches into a train museum on your layout.

Personally I have basically tinkered off and on with Z for many years. I didn't decide to try to build something up till last month. Having also been into N here and there as well I like what I can do with Z now that there are more locomotive choices ( Especially by AZL) . My apartment is small so I have to keep size to a minimum. For the moment a basic 2X4 will have to do . And I thought ham radio was addictive!! One of my unmarked boxcars may end up with my call sign being put on it ! Having been licensed for almost 10 years I decided I needed a small break of sorts from my ham radio activitys. Trains is that !w.c. Ah, I know your problem well! My boyfriend is an avid ham and we could easily fill a large space with radio equipment and train layouts. Two great hobbies! Enjoy both.
