So nickel silver is more easy to form the shell? I was actually thinking of scanning an N scale and 3D printing it to the right scale, then forming a liquid alloy around the plastic shell... That way I would only have to use an existing loco and swap the shells Both shells are build from etched parts, soldered and glued together. My switchers are made from roughly 100 parts. The material thickness in my case is 0.25mm, which makes me able to build a prototypical accurate width of the hood. The method you describe I don't think you will end up with a detailed and accurate shell. Scanning in 3D has lots of flaws, if you have access to professional equipment like in some universities you might get something usable. Printing, especially Shapeways has so far never satisfied me in surface finish. So, good luck!

My take on Gerard is that he is not a crook. He just run his business badly and doesn't care. It's too bad. His locomotive 🚂 are pretty good. As nearly a neighbour (120 miles apart) I'm in rather close contact to him. He's just an old school lonesome craftsman who works... as an old school lonesome craftsman. Very busy with his Z scale swichers, but with HO scale French prototype etched brass parts and kits as well. Dom

I get the feeling he is very much like the artist type. The art work (loco) will be ready when it's ready. 😊

The art work (loco) will be ready when it's ready. 😊 I add a comment that was made in another thread: Jan 8, 2016 at 8:53am smr said: There has been a French offering switchers; proto87.team.pagesperso-orange.fr/ May be our French Z-scalers know him better, Gerard Huet. Does he deliver??? Best, Sven That is what I hoped... I actually got a bad experience here. We got in contact (pretty good actually earlier this year, with quick email answers, phone call). We discussed a lot about his switchers, and he actually made a new design (D&RGW GE44ton) on my demand. When the switcher was ready in September (rather quickly!), I paid him using paypal and asked to send it a week after (I was on duty). This is when I got his last email " ok I right in down on my agenda"... Since then, after many emails and no answers (and 462$ away!) I contacted paypal to get a reply from him. The deadlines came and still no answer..... I really wonder what happened... I finally and luckily got my money back thanks to paypal....almost all, because of the €/$ changes I lost about 12€... I send him a last email to ask this money left, still waiting... .. but I'm really sad about this story and I cannot recommend such seller....at least not until I get excuses and /or answers of what happened. I don't get it... (I'm still ready for discussion if he wants....but I won't buy, sorry) Read more: azlforum.com/thread/601/brass-engine-kit?page=3#ixzz4Q1NbdSx9

I got my switcher, but I can't really recommend his locos due to his bad service. He will answer all emails until he gets full payment. Then it stops completely. If you want to roll the dice, pay him with PayPal.

The person you want to talk to is Gerd. My guess is $750.

The person you want to talk to is Gerd. My guess is $750. Gerd has custom painted some loco shells for me recently-for being half way around the world, he is very good and quick to get it back to you, and very professional-100% trustworthy!!

It is less expensive if you start scratch building in styrene... I was eventually able to build mine from styrene, used only handtools and Dremmel drill. Chopping the chassis (per David Karp's demonstrated idea) was the biggest challenge. ...which still keeps me from building an other one. /Frank

You assume too much Frank. Not everybody has your building skills.

Thank you for the complement, patience is the most important skill. Styrene is a great material to build scale models. Just start with simple buildings, eventually one can build a simple gondola or caboose body.

I'll let Gerd work on the GMD-1 just so I can get Jason at Rapido trains jealous while I concentrate on my layout, including hand laid rails... but the styrene might be a future project I could look at down the road, With the 3d printer I want to buy and the laser cutter too haha
