I'm curious, has anyone tried to switch MTL F7 bodies to AZL F3 chassis?

I would also like to know about putting a MTL GP35 shell on an AZL GP38-2.

I can try the gp35 shell on the 38-2 when I get home today. See how close they are to fitting
As far as the f3-f7 I'm not sure how to get the shells off the units to try it

Interesting: I just got a pair of AZL F3's and they run extremely well and very smoothly and my MTL's F7 just don't run as well as they should and never have despite constant cleaning and servicing. In fact the powered B unit on one of my MTL sets runs much better then the A unit. In as far as getting the bodies off the chassis of AZL F3's Rob, any suggestions? If this works, I'm going to buy two more sets of AZL F units and transfer the MTL bodies to those.

Willy,
I have to ask what roadnames you have in MTL that AZL hasn't done. I have had the same experience with MTL F7s. Just curious.

christoff....that would be great if you could try a MTL GP35 shell on the AZL GP38. I have a Burlington Route shell I would like to use on an AZL GP38 mechanism if it fits. Thanks for the help.

On my side I've not done any test but one has to know that MTL's GP35 is a few millimeters shorter than AZL's GP38. And one millimeter broader. Not sure the swap would fit.
(prototype GP35 = 56'2", prototype GP38/GP38-2 = 59'2")

I recall that Gerd did a GP35 shell on a GP30 chassis. The GP38-2 chassis is too long. /Frank

The 30 and 35 are the same length. The 38 is longer as stated above. As for the MTL F units if memory serves me right (getting old) the power chassis for the B units are a new design.I don't have Fs any myself, not a lot of them running the rails in 2016.

Willy, I have to ask what roadnames you have in MTL that AZL hasn't done. I have had the same experience with MTL F7s. Just curious. Canadian National black and white stripe with red nose and white lettering, and Canadian Pacific in the burgundy and grey. I'll run Via if AZL ever produces them and gets it right the first time out and Canadian Pacific in the red. I'd also like to see the passenger version of the F series in the black and green with yellow nose and lettering to go with the heavy weight passenger cars already produced, but that a pipe dream.

MTL has done the Zephyr as freight engines (no passenger yet in Z), and the Pullman Green. Nobody has done the pumpkin or "new image" green. To the credit of AZL they did come up with a obscure paint scheme on their GP7s, pushing my count of WP paint schemes to 15. Mark

Has anyone been able to make a swap with a MTL F7 shell on an AZL F3 chassis?

Out of curiosity, I took my AZL F3, and placed it beside an MTL F7 and examined it closely from all angles, and I'm thinking that it is possible to interchange the bodies of these. I haven't done it with my own, because I haven't figured out how to get the shell of AZL's F3 without causing damage, but judging from the size, I think it's doable.

This passed weekend I took my MTL F7 and put it on the AZL F3 and to my surprise, they fit together quite nicely. Mind you, you have to remove the snow plow and coupler from the AZL unit because the one on the MTL is part of the actual body and can't be separated. By replacing the fixed coupler on the F3, with the truck mounted one, the MTL F7 body will fit right over it. The actual challenge comes from removing the body of the F3 from the chassis. It's not as easy as AZL's info on the EMD 8 makes it look. If one isn't careful, the contacts that run along the top of the fuel tank, can be very easily distorted and then you're hooped. It took a lot of effort to remove the body following those instructions. It can be done though. Now I need to buy 3 sets of AZL F3 A and B chassis only so I can switch out all my MTL F7's.
