I changed the couplers on my SD 70 and 75's to MTL and it's tricky but it can be done. I added snow plows to my SD's and the MTL coupler has to be screwed into the plow and it's not and easy task if you don't have steady hands and good eyes. The AZL coupler has to be gently removed from the truck before hand.

I'm surprised of what you're saying about SD70's snowplows. On mine, which are 1st generation, the front snowlows are provided with a screw hole, and one just has to put a MTL coupler box (#903, if I remember) inside, with the provided screw that matches with the hole.
Speaking of my GP38s I plan to swap their truck mounted AZL couplers with body mounted MTL's. I don't know yet how I'm going to proceed, I think I'll do it with plastic shims and cyanolite glue, using a MTL coupler gauge... I'll keep you advised on time. ;-)

Christoff, it is approxiately 1 mm. Underside of the piece of brass needs to be 5.2mm (.206") above the top of the rail. This size could differ per locomotive model. I used. The MTL tap and drill set #1059. Drill no. 62 , tap 00-90 (which fits to the screws that come with the #903 body mount coupler. I used a hand vice to drill and tap. I found it most easiest first to drill the hole, prior to filing the piece of brass to its required size.
