Is it even worth using the static grass method for Z scale? Since Z is so tiny, would the stand up grass be too big?

Mark I use it all of the time... and love it!!! It is definitely worth it. Here is a photo of static grass mixed in with Woodland Scenics course turf on the mountain. Rob

Question answered. Thank you Rob. I've never used it but thought it might be too tall or something for Z. Looks very nice Rob.

Is it even worth using the static grass method for Z scale? Since Z is so tiny, would the stand up grass be too big? Mark Mark: Noch makes 2.5mm long grass which is fine for z ... it's what they use on all their pre-forms and I think it is a very professional looking finish. I have the 50210 (spring meadow) grass in stock ... here's what it looks like: LINK to 50210 on Noch's website
I am also bringing in Noch's static applicator (although I've read you can make your own quite easily) for the first time. I have two Grasmaster 2.0 (#60135) units en route from Germany. Can't wait to try it out on my own layout. Rob: That layout looks great!

Thanks Frank! I have been using the 2mm - 4mm long static grass. I use a Grassinator made by John Cubbin of Raildig. It is more powerful than the Noch version. I love it! I know John is planning on offering these as well. He use to have an particle on the site on how to make your own, but I don't see it currently. Here is the link: www.raildig.comRob

It's worth it; looks much better than just a bunch of sprinkled foam all over with prefabricated scenery. I recommend painting on a thin base layer of fine sifted dirt, almost to a powder consistency, mixed with glue, let it dry for a few hours then, mist glue/water mix and add static grass. Just get Woodland Scenics Static Flock Grass [#FL631 through FL635]; in my opinion the Noch stuff looks too generic.

Wow, very impressive. Now all I need are the tools to do this and I'm good to go. Thanks for all of the information and replies.

Interresting comments. My goal, on my side, is putting static grass between rails in order to build a derelict branchline that in the prototype sits in Mexico. Don't know whether it has already been done in Z. I know for sure in HO, but I've no information for other scales.
However I know I'll have to be very cautious, especially for locomotives' gearings. I consider glueing a very thin styrene plate around these on trucks' underneath....

As for the applicator do a search on YouTube for "DIY Static Grass Applicator" Theirs dozens of videos on how to build your own. I have heard both good and bad reports on how well they work, but for just a couple dollars it might be worth a try.
If you build one BECAREFUL These can Zap you pretty good

Very interesting topic. I always left the static grass aside because I was sure it would look inapropriate in Z.
Dieselfuelx, you are telling us that you recommend Woodland Scenics. I don't see anywhere on the net the lenght of that grass. Noch has different lenght to choose from but Woodland Scenics has only one type.
How long are they ? It seems right when I look at your picture but I am surprised that the only size they have fits for Z.
Thank you
Patrice

Yah, I would recommend it...work's for my purposes. The fiber sizes are 1/16in - 1/8in (1mm - 3mm)...so Woodland Scenics Static Flock is not just one type/height. I use a mixture/blend of the different colors. I think in my diorama pictures I used a mix of light green and medium green with a bit of burnt grass; they also have harvest gold and wild honey. Here is a another picture to reference the dirt base layer and grass height.

Something like a 7-10mm wide strip of styrene. It would lower 2-3mm when rolling stock passed over and would snap back up as roadbed once the train passed. Plant the grass on this strip. I think I'd try cutting up some roadbed sectional track to get a gravel texture without the mechanical problems that glue-on ballast could create. Mark

Hi Mark. Interresting thoughts. But according to you, what should command the system's retractation where the train is?
