I've been tempted to dump my large Z collection and go to N. The difference in the amount of money is huge. I read some N-scale boards with folks crying about spending less than $100.00 for locos that are more reliable, less problems, more details, and bigger selection of road-names. If only Z had such "problems".

Looking around, there really isn't much Monongahela in any scale. Ever thought about doing your own? While Microscale has discontinued Monongahela decals, they're still available in HO & N and some logos on the HO sheet look like they might work in Z.
I've looked at going back to the larger scales over the years: better detail in larger scales and more rolling stock for the roads I model. But I really don't see much of a price difference between non-Marklin Z and good N scale.
What keeps me in Z is the space. I have S scale and a two track loop takes up 5 x 9 feet (nearly all my available space) as compared to less than 2 x 3 feet in Z. Then I start thinking about the 2x4s and 3/4" plywood I'd need for the bench work and I'm back to Z.

PS - I wasn't going to comment on reliability since I haven't done much outside of Z for at least a decade, but the owner of the train store I bought my Mikado through did remark that the AZL Mikado runs better than the N scale Mikados.

Guys not putting anyone or any scale down. There is no doubt the bigger the scale the detail is better. As for quality ,I have z to o and everybody has there +'s and -'s . I just like modeling the Monongahela Railroad . It's just nice to see the small railroad wasn't forgotten. The only 2 scales that doesn't have it in there line up is G and Z . As for me painting and applying decals well that will probably not go well .I had bought 3 AZL GP 38's non dec to paint and that's yet to happen. I was hoping Hans or the rest of guys at AZL or MTL would come threw. If the wheel squeaks enough . Hopefully the oil will come. LOL. As for room for a layout Z wins hands down in my book and the detail is getting better. I'll never give up on Z scale. As for cost of the 2 O scale Lionel engines cost me over $725.00 . That could have been a whole lot of z rolling stock. . Bob PS remember your not railroading if you can't keep it on the damm track. Lol

I just had some guy on FB tell me that there is no DCC in Z scale and he would not like to use tweezers and magnifying glass to work on his trains. I just reminded him that if he has something more than a plastic Life Like toy engine in HO, that it would have fiddly bits that needed tweezers and magnifier too. Anyone can model what they want to, I am happy to run LONG trains across my prairies and have it look like a real train, actually going from here to there, and not just round and round.
