Anybody else notice the interesting CP loco in the background? Do you mean the recently released SD40-2 with the abomination paint scheme? That is, the early action red scheme with a solid black glossy roof, seen in reality by no one ever. They got the paint scheme right on the GP38-2, ES44AC and the SW1500 however the research on CP's SD40-2 turned up only very grimy roofed photos, apparently. I still hope for a mea culpa from AZL and a shell replacement... I should also hope to live so long. I personally think that this is not a bit harsh; I think it’s an overreaction (and childish)! One ear in, other etc… Please stop this derogatory behavior. I am sure AZL did its research. If the roof is slightly off, look at the rest of the loco! AZL does us all a great favor by manufacturing US locos to a level of detail no one can remotely match. Appreciate what we have and the people that stick their necks out to do so! -Tiest

I still hope for a mea culpa from AZL and a shell replacement... I should also hope to live so long. Black or Red? One of the hardest things to get right is the roof of a locomotive or car. Not too many photographers take pictures from hilltops. We try to verify everything with actual photos because railroads frequently paint things differently than the plans call for. So was the roof red or black? Answer is probably both. The factory indicated that with our current backlog of products, a new set of shells would be about 18 - 24 months away. With that information, we’ve decided to keep the black roofs - they are selling pretty quickly anyway - because a black roof is better than no roof at all. Next time they will be red. If anyone wants the red paint code, please let me know, but most popular railroad paint makers will be a good match and easier to acquire than finding paint that matches our Pantone codes.

Maybe you could talk another manufacturer into producing one for you. Sorry but I just don't get the constant complaining. If I don't see exactly what I want/desire then I simply don't purchase it, buy it somewhere else or modify it to meet my needs. If none of the above work then -- Oh Well! Overall, AZL has done a fantastic job in producing detailed Locos. Do they miss a detail or two occasionally, you betcha. Most model railroaders aren't rivet counters (me included). I don't care if horns, bells or exact color schemes are perfect as long as the locos and cars perform well and meet my "general" overall layout -- 95% UP and the Rocky Mountains. BTW, I just looked at the pictures on all of the dealer sites and they all show a black roof -- no misrepresentation whatsoever. Take care

Not only that, but any individual prototype loco likely will vary in appearance over time, which makes it even harder to do precise matching.
Honestly, I have to say that IMHO any talk of "mea culpas" and "replacements" seems pretty over the top. Didn't the purchaser even look at pictures of what they were buying before placing the order? If a model is not up to expectations, then there is always the option not to buy it, but no one has any obligation to replace, refund or apologize over something like that. It is not a defect or misrepresentation.

In the same vein as this, it is not clear to me at all that there is any problem. Pictures from the 1970s are less common, but it does appear that during that decade the locos may have had black roofs: www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=5257420www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=5083011www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=5566029 [see the second loco] Sure by the mid 1980s they were repainted, but with any historical endeavor it is important to specify "when." When these locos were made, they probably came with black roofs.

With regard to my original post, I was noting that the loco in the video did not have a black roof (so was presumably not an SD40-2) and was wondering if it might be a SD60, for example.

I think everyone should be able to express their opinion...roof color, undecs, whatever. AZL and Z-Scale only get better if there is feedback, good and bad. As to harshness...well that's the proverbial "catching more flies with honey" situation. Not the method many of us would choose when trying to influence a situation, but that's a delivery problem, not a message problem. The message has merit. And let's be honest...sometimes taking the high road doesn't get the point across. Suggesting to someone to simply "not buy it" or "get it from another company" is silly. You know good and well it's not that simple. It's not that simple in N-scale for the most part, and certainly not in Z. In HO, yes maybe you can find another manufacturer that makes the same model, but Z ain't HO, by a country mile. Put yourself in their shoes...if that was your favorite railroad or scheme that had some exteremely obvious oddity, how would you feel? Would you be upset? (be honest) You gonna "not buy it"? [EDIT: I do acknowledge that Micro-Trains does have an SD40-2. I don't know if they did the CP unit in question, but yes there certainly is an alternative product in this case.] [EDIT 2: I guess MTL did do the CP Rail scheme: www.zscalemonster.com/mt/970-00-000/970-01-181.jpg . I know some folks like to pan the MTL locos, but they are really workable in my book. If MTL does a BNSF H1, I'm probably going for it.] And speaking of opinions, it is my opinion that AZL made a mistake with the CP locos. Just look at the large body of work from other manufacturers in other scales...99.9999% did the CP locos with red roofs and guess what nobody is "blowing up" the interwebs about it. It simply looks better without the black, nobody's gonna complain about it, and it's MUCH easier to add the black part after the fact than the other way around. (And also the high gloss finish is a faux pas too, which really makes the situation worse.) Having said all that, I will come to AZL's defense somewhat. If you look at the artwork, it does seem to indicate that the roof will be black. But it's easy to find that little detail after the fact, and it isn't extremely obvious. (especially if you're not really expecting that, and you might even think it's just a derivitive of the artwork) At least it might have been worth a discussion if anyone noticed it. (and, possibly that discussion happened...I don't know.)

I will say that the roof on the CP unit is not any different from the roof on my Rio Grande unit - I think “high gloss” might be more in the photo than anything.

In any case, high gloss is easily fixed with a spray of clear flat coat.

I am so tempted to grab these but must hold out for the SD60s. Hoefully they will come in the Green/white scheme. Pair a couple with an Oakway and life is good.
