I’m sure this has come up somewhere before but in light of AZLs release, I thought I’d ask everyone who has the MTL version the pros and cons of the Micro Trains SD40, as I do see them for sale every so often, and specifically how out of scale are they? I’d heard the nose is pretty wide but are there any other glaring mistakes?

As long as you don't run MTL locos WITH AZL locos, you'll be fine. When placed side by side, you notice the difference.

Since nobody else chimed in about the issues...
I think the nose width is probably the main complaint. Everything else would probably relate to prototype specific details, etc. The long hood might be slightly wide too, I'm not certain about that. I'm sure once enough of these get out in the wild someone will take some side-by-sides to show the differences.
For all the consternation about MTL's width issues, I personally don't think they look bad. In fact, had I known AZL would bail on the body mount couplers I probabaly would have kept mine. And if MTL does a BNSF H1 I'll probably pick one or two up since it's probably going to be 8-10 years before AZL gets around to it, if ever.

They also run slower (I have 1st hand info why), trucks are overly wide (same as the F’s), plow needs shave up so it doesn’t snag on switches/märklin expansion tracks/poor grade changes.
Otherwise, the run reliably well.

Thanks for the info, I'll be interested in seeing some comparison pictures in the future. As I'm sure AZL won't be releasing the Chessie SD40s for a while, I might just pick up a few MTL units and paint them up in B&O.

I love new AZL SD40-2's prototypical details well, and I love MTLs with bodymouted couplers and Maxon motor silence.
