the Rokuhan MTL compatible couplers? The Rokuhan Rapido style coupler easily pops out and it's MTL compatible replacement easily snaps in over a pin inside the pocket. I'm wondering if the diameter is close enough to the AZL pin to make it an easy replacement. I have some long shank ones to try for a test, but I don't know how to remove the AZL coupler and don't want to damage the pocket.

Well, it's easier to get the pocket apart than back together! But, it looks like with a little fiddling with the coupler itself it can be made to work. I'll see about refining the process and report back. One thing tho, the Rokuhan couplers are not as pretty as the AZL or MTL ones.

Unfortunately they seem to rest too high, and too much material needs to be removed (thinning them beyond usefulness) to permit the freedom of movement that they need to allow for easy coupling. They seem to be stiffer than the AZL coupler that I am trying to replace. (I guess if it were that easy, folks would already be doing it)

Well, with a little fiddling and some advice from another forum, I have MTL couplers on my nearly unmodified AZL pocket (I had to drill out the center of the coupler mounting pin inside the pocket). I am 100% satisfied with it's function and now the locomotive--its a great locomotive, I just messed it up in the process, but now have learned a lot about this engine and how to set it right again without having to replace the trucks.. That’s no coincidence! We designed our coupler pocket to be easily adaptable to MTL couplers. 😁
