As an active modeler all my life, first in HO, then N and now dabbling with Z Scale, word that Atlas is introducing its first freight car is welcome news and portends to a bright future for Z in general.
Additionally, Atlas becoming more involved in Z means one thing, more competition for AZL, Marklin and MTL in which they'll have to "up their game" with better quality products to entice buyers and increase sales.
Once Atlas gets on track (no pun intended) with more freight car releases, hopefully locomotives will be next. I'm relatively new to Z and I have a few AZL GP 38's, MTL GP 35's and SD40-2's. The one thing I've noticed about my AZL GP 38's is that they can be "finicky and inconsistent" runners. Friends that have also reported inconsistent running with AZL GP 30's and SD 45's. No offense Hans and Rob but, I'm hesitent to buy any more AZL loco's going forward.
Question: Will the pending SD40-2 release feature an improved or upgraded motor, drive mechanism or circuit board? I saw the art proofs which look beautiful but, what about what's under the shell? Any upgrades?
Until AZL can make all their loco's "smooth runners" 100% of the time, fresh out of the box, I'll favor my MTL's and wait for Atlas to start releasing Z locomotives. Until AZL starts making Z locomotives as good as KATO or Atlas in N Scale, maybe then I'll revisit.
So, where exactly did you hear of Atlas doing more than track in Z scale?? I could not find anything on their website or the interwebs either? I would not hold my breath on that one...

You should come to a show sometime and watch us run unmodified AZL locomotives for hour after hour with nary a hiccup (as long as the track is clean).
I'm not sure why your experience has been so far from the norm, but I hope that you'll reconsider in short order. I can't even remember the last time we ran an MTL locomotive, other than an occasional old-school F7 for demonstration purposes.
Anyway, I'm interested in what Atlas brings to the table, but also with a fresh memory of Intermountain dipping their toes into Z, apparently without knowing ANYTHING about the Z scale market. My fingers are crossed that Atlas is committed and successful. More options is almost always a good thing.
Having been in the hobby for a long time, AZL locos run about as well as anything I've seen...from my experience. I can be critical of AZL in certain areas, but the quality and running characteristics of their locos isn't one of them.
I don't have every model of course...only 1ea of the mentioned GP30 and SD45 and not a lot of running time on either. So I'll concede there surely can be dogs in the mix here and there. But I think a lot of Z-scalers would provide similar evidence that AZL locos are generally very good runners.
So my point is, don't give up on getting good running locos from AZL. My second loco from them was a UP GP38-2, and that thing was an absolute beast. It could pull as well as most of my N geeps, was nice and smooth and quiet and could creep at slow speeds....not Kato-like but darn close. If you want to see something really amazing, buy one of the SW1500's...they are works of art and they run well and pull well. The ES44's run about as good as any loco I've seen in any scale.

With every locomotive, we try to make it better than ever.
With specifics to the upcoming SD40-2, the motor is a newer model. The drive mechanism is an industry best practice split frame design, but we are always improving tolerances in gearing (both lash and fit) bearing locations and gear arrangement. The circuit board has also been upgraded and is a screw-in type for greater reliability. Circuit board components have also been upgraded with newer LEDs.

Zero complaints. Some observations. I remain in awe of AZL products. Moreover, “Highly detailed, irresistible”—Ne’er a truer word spoken. As is with others (I see more and more.), if it weren’t for AZL, I would never have activated my love of model railroading as an inner city apartment dweller. Also, don’t need a glass of white wine, don’t need melatonin, don’t need a six-mile run to fall asleep at night. I just look at AZL stuff on tracks. Then, I am able to feel content. Then, I am able to fall asleep. (Why? I do not know. The same holds true for individuals with a pet, for individuals with a spouse, or both.)
