The AZL GP-30 that I purchased in January 2014 ran fine for break in period of approximately one hour using my Rokuhan figure eight tracklayout with 270mm curves and Rokuhan controller. When I ran it on the Rokuhan double track last week, itnow makes a gear grinding noise that is intermittent, but still mostly heard when running both forward and reverse. It lurches slower when making the gear grinding noise on both my figure eight track layout and my double oval layout both by Rokuhan, including controllers.
I did not see a screw at either end of the loco body interior, so I gently pulled each truck off the GP-30 loco frame. Under a helping hands magnifier, I did not any broken teeth orflashing debris on the plastic gears in the trucks that both turned freely when rolled. The two metal worm gears also appeared clear of any debris. I only removed a small amount of fuzzfrom one of the wheel axles for the trucks. I used compressedair from a spray can to clear out the trucks and worm gears. After reassembling the trucks, I ran the loco without hte exteriorshell and still observed the intermittent grinding noise and lurching, as seen before. I had the same noise and lurching with body exterior shell replaced.
I noticed very little clearance between the metal strips for contacting the truck power pickups and the metal frame of the loco. If one of these metal strips contactsthe metal frame, would it short and cause the gears in the truck to not get power, thus causing the grinding noise?
