Since you are using this layout as a test bed, there are a couple of things you might want to try. Consider the super elevated curves. They don't work everywhere but look good on a long broad curve. I've paired them with a one size larger flat curve and IMHO makes for a very realistic curve. I like using a diluted India ink wash on the roadbed. It adds definition to the gravel and knocks down the plastic sheen. I consider a 2-foot depth to be a little tight considering all their track options we haven't had before. Although for a test bed it should be adequate. Mark Hi Mark, Thanks for the thoughts. I bet the super elevated curves look great. I know 2 foot depth is limiting but as you mentioned it's only to get something started while I plan a larger layout. I may even go slightly under 2' depending on what materials I have available. Living in a condo means no power tools or messy operations. I miss my house and big basement! Totally agree about the india ink wash, I used it in N and it worked well to tame down the fake looking ballast. Thanks again. Steve W

I have to try that India ink wash. I have done tests with diluted black paint wash and dry brushed highlights but even that is labor intensive.

I found it’s best to apply the wash before laying out the track. The wash is thin and will also highlight the roadbed joints. Also remove the throttle taps and wash them separately. Other than that, you can pretty much just slop it on.

Cool, I'll try it, is there a ratio to thinning the ink? Or just apply straight from the bottle and let it run off? Maybe time for a You Tube search...

Found it markm, 1-2 tsp non waterproof ink (intensity to taste) to 1 pint of alcohol (70% or 91% are fine no diff) and note that different colors of ink are available, like black or brown.
