Thanks to the time I’ve spent playing with all the F units, I’ve found I’ve picked up a couple of dummy units with electrically active trucks. I’m thinking they just might make a good DCC sound car. Can anyone recommend a sound-only decoder small enough to fit?

Does AZL make dummy F-b units? Nope. All of ours are smart. All of our B units are powered. David Wolf has done amazing work with DCC sound in our AZL locomotives. They sound better than HO and have freaked out hundreds at train shows in the Mid Atlantic states. Almost all of his are powered, but he has started adding sound to boxcars to enhance the mid train sound experience (rail curve squeaks and clickty clack of joints all timed to the speed of the master DCC locomotive.) it’s really impressive on a long train.

Markm for a sound only decoder I have used the orignal Soundtraxx Tsunami decoders in the past. I don't know if the new Tsunami 2's will work with out being connected to a motor or not. With the orignals i had to wire in a resistor in across the motor contacts.
As Rob said I have also been experiminting with the Tsunami Sound Car Decoders with pretty good success. I have a writeup 1/2 done hoping to finish it in the next week or two and get it up to Rob K to put in Z Track Magazine for everyone.
Yes MTL did use the same truck assembly for both their powered and dummy F7 A and B units. Marklin did the same thing with their version of the F7. Unlike MTL, Marklin also used the same chassis in their dummy F7 as they did in the powered F7.
A little info about speakers that I learned the hard way rather I should say the expensive way. Their is often a Big diffrence in sound quality from a "Cell Phone Speaker" and a "Cell Phone Type Speaker" They are not the same thing.

Most I know use ESU LokSound Micro 5 series typically with the Sugar Cube. You can visit the SBS4DCC.com and Bryan has a huge variety of all of the sound decoders and speakers. I thought the MTL B chassis we’re literally unweighted, just a shell and a metal plate with the mushroom truck post on it. Either way you’re still a dead sled, pick up or not. The more you can remove of the weight easier it is for you to get any of the sound coders in. But you won’t really be able to enjoy the sound without replacing the solid fan tops with the upgrades like Robert Ray did with his. Making a sound inside the box doesn’t do you any good.
The good news is you can put a Tantalum Capacitor bank as you really need good steady power, as the Sound decoder is now going to *TELL* you how bad your track and pickup is.
