Usually, I will buy stuff and just sock it away. I had about 20 UP domes and 10 Empire Builder domes made by MTL. I also bought 1 of each road number (now sold out) made by AZL. Unwrapped, today... To me, MTL GN Domes seem more accurate!
In the 80’s, I had access to the passenger car fleets. If I remember, GN domes were built by Budd... I believe the AZL smooth side domes are not correct for GN. However, The AZL zephyr dome profile is correct for GN...
Somebody, at least, check my math... Before AZL reorders more of those “incorrect” (sold-out) GN!

Our lightweight Dome cars are somewhat generic, but we used the AC&F drawings that were used for UP Dome cars mid 1950s. Overall a pretty good match for other Dome cars. Now since you mentioned GN, we would love to one day do a Full Dome passenger car!

Hey, now we're talking some exciting stuff! One of the multiple generations/versions of Alaska dome cars is related to the GN and Milw full dome cars. Here's an article that references all 3 road names: www.alaskarails.org/fp/me/BPS/index.htmlCheck out how many other road names are referenced, if I'm reading that right!

You are correct: the GN domes were built by Budd But you are incorrect: the GN domes were smooth sided. Our tooling is not an exact match, but it is very close. The Zephyr Domes would be complete wrong for the Great Northern. trainweb.org/web_lurker/GN/

I attended safety meetings and classes at Beech Grove during Amtrak’s heavy rebuilding period. At one time, I knew quite a bit about car bodies while on AAPRCO’s board. FWIW...I am in the Handbook of Railroad Officials.
