Is there a way to add weight to the 39' tank cars and the cabooses?

I figured it out. I did not realize the end caps come off the tank cars. One car already had a weight in it. I used some fishing lure weights in the other. I also finally figured out how to remove body from chassis on caboose. I have been using Storm SuspenStrips to add weight in other cars. The strips have a sticky back so they stay in place when installed.

One thought is that you may want to upgrade to metal wheels (if both of these items are Micro-Trains). I don't necessarily recommend adding weight to cars. Most of the time, it is not needed. But upgrading to metal wheels makes a huge difference. You add a little weight lower to the rail with the heavier wheels. Plus the cars will run so much better.

Metal wheels helps lower the center of gravity in the cars as well. More weight in the cars and they start to sway back and forth alot more.

Either by Full Throttle or Fox Valley Models. I use them with FT and MTL cars, I don't know if they will fit AZL's.

AZL has metal wheels, so no worries there.

I must admit that I didn't look at my 2 or 3 AZL cars, I bought them after my first "upgrading" action (I have still some FT's and MTL's not upgraded, this will be done in a near future). Nothing against AZL, the cars are very fine, but very few of them fit my era, the 60's, they are rather either for the steam era or after 1970 (coil cars), or even very "modern" . On the other side all my engines but 1 are AZL. To tjdreams : Fox Valley sells sets of 12 axles, at Z Scale Monster, too ... I don't know how many zman needs.

I'm with ya', I model the 60-70's era and I mostly have upgraded M-T cars(gasp!!)for my Milwaukee Road. I have a few of the 40' outside braced boxcars though, being pulled by AZL locos, of course!

Metal wheels are a given, but too much weight and you get a significant wobble. I added a hobo to one of my 40’ boxcars & it ran fine. Added a bedroll and it rocked.

First: Why? What is your reason to do this, with thousands of us running the manufacturers and X10-X50 more physical rolling stock rolling with out issue. Derails and such are generally trackwork.
I highly suggest you don't add weight. 1) it will always be higher than physics, 2) likely too much (there is no real spec for Z), 3) too much weight can make the wheel axle points lift out of the truck frame pocket [take a look at them carefully *and* the different variants of the trucks] and you can see how much slop is in there and how easy they could come out with a bit more pressure.
Metal wheels will solve it all. "We" are sure of that.

Ditto on the metal wheels for MTL and other cars that do not come with them. They can be hard to find though, and they are popular! Last week I got some from Z Scale monster though.
