I saw this picture of a PFE box car, with both UP and SP logos on one side (I think it's the same on the other side ! ) ; so, I hope that an AZL PFE reefer (with logos on both sides, despite they are in colour and not only black) would be suitable for my era (MA, 1964) ? I saw another picture of a PFE car in PA.

Alberich,
There's a lot of types of PFEs with the spotting difference being the doors. The car you're looking at would be the MTL 549 series, a little late for your era. The most appropriate cars would be the MTL 548 00 101/102. Being that they were refrigerated cars their routing would be more flexible than the earlier cars. The AZL cars would be a bit old for your era, but I recall seeing such cars in Truckee CA in the early 1960s, so it's possible.
You've said you want to limit the size of your inventory. You might what to look into the cars that alternate the logos from side to side. That way it looks like you have two cars.

Thanks, Mark, but I have already the MTL 548 00 031 (i.e. the car You mentioned, but in NYC colours), so the PFE version would only be a colour variant ... And another advantage is that the AZL is a "short" (40') car, I don't wanna buy more 50' versions, my freight track length will only allow trains with maximum 3 x 50/51' and 2 x 40', plus caboose (which will stay at the end of the train, further than the freight plattform). A 50' could be replaced with a 40', but not the opposite ! And I saw that such a train, with the 40' at the ends, will need a (freight) plattform of at least about 32 cm (about 70 m, 230' in 1/1 scale : the length of the couplers must be added, too ! ) so that all doors (if present : gondolas ! ) can be accessed ; I will "kitbash" commercial versions of buildings (Kibri co-op and Faller) with Evergreen. The cars will be swapped manually, by the hand of "Control" (see "Starlight Express" for the explanation )

Yes I remember the discussion about the car. For the PFEs, the ice bunker cars were phased out by 1960 on the railroads (reporting marks UPFE & SPFE for example). However under the PFE reporting mark some continued to run until the late 1960s. So it would be possible to see one in 1964, but it would be some place that still had ice houses. Remember too that the doors open out, so you platform will need a little extra clearance.

I saw another picture of a PFE car in PA. The car in the picture is a R-70-16, which has not yet been offered in N. These would be too new for 1964, but they were very similar to the PFE R-70-14 cars built in 1964: www.railgoat.railfan.net/spcars/byclass/reefer/r070-14.htmMTL's ribbed side reefer is based on an ATSF prototype (RR-72), but is a decent stand-in for PFE classes R-70-11 and R-70-12 www.railgoat.railfan.net/spcars/byclass/reefer/r070-12.htm
