Good afternoon...will a Micro-Trains GP9 shell fit on an AZL GP30 without modifications? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I can check this evening, but right off I can tell you that the GP30 wheelbase is a foot (prototype) longer,

With a bit of pressure or a short stroke with a file it will. MTL's GP9 chassis is common with the GP35, which is even longer than the GP30. It's somewhere in between and therefore a fit for the AZL chassis.

Dave, all, Without modifications: No. With modifications: Maybe. Our comments about wheelbase is irrelevant as they are the same. Horizontally, the MTL shell is a few mils shorter than the AZL frame, so there would be a need to probably shave the frame. The shell looks too thin to be cut down much. The AZL frame is also 5 mils higher: This becomes a problem as the MTL shell has a shoulder that rests on the frame: Need to cut down the AZL frame and/or the MTL shell shoulder. Lastly you probably need to replace the T1 LEDs on the MTL lighting board with nano-LEDS. Since I didn't perform the above modifications, I can't be certain. I hope this satisfies the curiosities. Now please satisfy my curiosity: Why an MTL shell on an AZL chassis? The MTL chassis are good runners, DCC-able, and readily available both new and used. Mark

Thanks for your time in checking this. There is a MTL Central Vermont shell on eBay I was going to get and I have an AZL GP30 that I could use the chassis with it. Thanks again Mark for this; I appreciate it.

Dave, No problem. You'll never guess which two locomotives are on my work bench to be DCC'ed. It also gave me new insight into both the locomotives. BTW: Norm's Train World ( www.normstrainworld.com/ ) is having retirement sale and he had a number of the MTL GP for sale at 50% off. They aren't on his web site but if you're interested contact him through Email. Mark
