Just curious. I’ve been collecting the UP 100 Ton and 70 Ton Full Throttle hoppers and thinking its time for a loco to pull them on the layout. I’ve been debating on a pair of the SD45, GP30and now the GP7. Then I noticed the UP GP7 is part of Gen 1.
Would the GP7 round better paired up with the SD45 or the GP30.

There was nothing in the dealer release, but here is a communique directly from Rob Kluz when I asked the difference in October 2014:
I don’t have too much information (regarding the differences between Gen 1 and Gen 2) other than the first run of GP7s used Faulhauber 8mm motors. The new run of GP7, SD70s, GP30s, RDCs and GP38s use AZL proprietary 7.5mm motor

Gen 1: 8mm Faulhauber motor. 8 volts maximum power. Does not accept TCS/Digitrax drop in DCC decoder (But TCS Z2 wired DCC decoder fits) Gen 2: 7.5mm AZL motor. 12 volts maximum power. Accepts drop in DCC decoder from TCS and Digitrax. Redesigned drive train, chassis, and electrical power pickups.
I think performance of them is about the same: Gen 1 has a better motor, but Gen 2 has a better drive train and chassis.
Gen 1 can be identified by its 4 digit part number. Gen 2 has a 5 digit part number.

With a sample size of one each, I find V1 runs consistently faster than v2: From a DC operations standpoint, all my AZL GP models match up nicely for MU operation. Don't have an SD45 to compare to. Prototypically, you'll find examples of a GP7 running with just about every locomotive model AZL makes just depends on the road. Mark
