Sadly it looks like the same old wide body tooling. How do you know? So far I've only seen the broadside drawings which don't tell me much and MTL describes as "representations." Mark

I did ask, I received no response. I would love to be proven wrong of course. If MTL did correct their hood width problem, I'd buy a fleet of them. However I was actually hoping AZL would produce one in plastic. That seems less likely now.

I did ask, I received no response... Maybe start a rumor? I was really hoping for a description like they offer for the business car. I suspect like the F7 retool that there will be some enhancements to the design it would be nice to know. Maybe an announcement after the pre-order period ends? Mark

I have both, and I don't think it's that noticeable. It looks bad on the GP35, because it's so short.

MTL's resumption of production of their own SD40-2 does not really impact our thinking much due to the differences in hood width between what MTL has made, and what we would make. But, but, but!!! We do have other locomotives that we would like to produce BEFORE the SD40-2.

I'm just glad to get any SD40-2 that's not made of gold.

Just saw that Joe has a pre-order page up for SD40-2 delivery starting in 2018.
That long... Could be new tooling!
I didn't order yet
...but did pre-order three (sets of 4) SP Daylights. (I previously got two of AZL's 7 car sets)
This is 14 heavyweight and 12 smooth sides in daylight colors. ...Should work great for secondary trains.
AZL and MTL both have great products for Z scale. I say we should support both franchises/organizations.

Rob is correct about the SD40-2 being on our list. We actually started the project before we knew about the MTL SD40-2 (original release). Yes there are other locomotives we will make (3 different in progress not counting the ES44AC) before we tool a SD40-2. But we do not have a fixed SD40-2 sign off date and it surely will be including many different options.

That long... Could be new tooling! This is just my personal speculation (not speaking for AZL) but I doubt the MTL will be new tooling. I reserve the right to be wrong. The timeline is not that far away. New tooling projects for AZL can take as long as 3 years (as short as 18 months) and the tooling is a huge portion of the cost of the model. Typically re-tooling is only done if the original is broken or worn out. Aluminium last about 20,000 shots. Steel last about 10 times longer, but cost much more. Those are very rough guidelines, but this is Z scale where volume is low, so it may take YEARS to wear out the tooling (example - the MTL F unit) So I doubt it will be new tooling.
