AZL’s all new body style is here! These are 60’ Greenville 7100 boxcars. These cars began their service in 1973. They were first used for the transport of auto-parts and placed into pool service. These cars would travel the country to deliver components to the car factories. The ‘322’ on the cars designated that they were assigned to the Ford motor plant in Lima, Ohio. In later years, these cars were repurposed to carry a variety of loads. They can still be found on the rails over 30 years after they first started their service. The first release is for the DT&I. How about leaving the boxcars to MTL. That's all they do anyway. 😳 Let's see... one caboose per train, maybe; one or two locomotives; 40 boxcars (or tank cars, ore gondolas, or...). I wonder where the money is made? |

I wonder where the money is made? If you follow MTL, 90 percent of their release is boxcars. For modern era, that's not much. I used to be happy with a modern boxcar, but after a while, I am boxcar out. |

Actually, all MTL does is REPAINTS of their old boxcar molds. Their PER DIEM series is repaints of their 50 foot boxcars, Their GN CIRCUS series is repaints of their 40 foot boxcars. Their Weathered series is "repaints" of all their rolling stock. At least AZL gives us new and interesting body styles for us to play around with and to spice up our trains. Oh, but there's still hope for MTL. I hear they're branching out. Their new HEINZ series are repaints of their old wooden reefer molds.   |

To put things *somewhat* into perspective, keep in mind that the street price for a modern MTL boxcars is about HALF that of this new AZL release. And Micro-Trains HAS released a newly tooled boxcar within the past two years.
Not knocking the AZL release at all--looks great--but man.....$43 for a boxcar is pushing it. I can't find anything talking specifically about the model itself, so I'm curious what features warrant that price point. Fortunately for me this Greenville car isn't of great interest....even with some likely foobie schemes coming, I'll only be in for one or maybe two.

if we left it to MTL, we would be waiting for years for new items to come out. OK so 60' box cars are not everyone's cup of T, but come on guys without AZL where would Z scale be?
If you don't like what ALL does go and set up your own manufacturing/design for Z scale and see what it costs.
Good job as always AZL, keep up the good work.

My wallet is safe for now. I have always wondered about the loads on those 89' flat cars; is it just me or are the loads way out of scale? The cars look nice but the loads just don't look right. Not being critical; just an observation.

From a dispassionate, economics point of view (the MBA in me talking), I like seeing AZL release cars as well as MTL. Both are providing, for the most part, different sorts of cars so there is some variety. These are all limited in quantity, driving the supply/demand curves, and there is plenty of room for competition from both companies. No competition in locomotives in my opinion, but given the huge variety AZL provides, and at competitive prices, that's OK at the moment. But we run far more cars than locomotives, so more is better and benefits us all. The only real question is does designing a freight car drain AZL resources to the point other products are delayed? I tend to doubt it. So Rob and Hans, you guys do your thing and much success to you.  |

The loads are to scale. Andy at Z-Panzer take detail and accuracy to another level. What you are seeing is the length of the cars at 89' make the loads seem small. See the prototype photo below of actually military vehicles on a 89' car. There is a lot of extra space on the car!   Boxcars.... first I am a boxcar fan... and a DT&I and enthusiast! When I saw the D&TI was part of the release, I know we had to release it first. No you won't see foobies. AZL is offering a limited variety of these cars based on their research. I think the back story on these cars is very interesting. I did my own research and found many are now lettered for short lines and are still in operation. To me, the history of the cars is just as interesting as their look and design. As for the DT&I, MTL and Full Throttle have offered cars for the road. Did you know that in 2007, Ztrack offered a MTL special run of DT&I boxcars? Shameless plug coming.... I did the research on these cars and worked with MTL on the art. These were basically all Ztrack. MTL did a great job on the cars. Here is a photo  And we still have a few sets available! See I told you a shameless plug was coming. You'll notice that all the loads in your photos are rubber tired vehicles. While I'm sure there are exceptions, you generally won't find tracked military equipment on the 89ft flats. For sure you won't find heavy tanks, as their weight would fold the 89ft flats in half. So, if someone thinks it looks odd, that's probably the issue. Stony Smith has done a basic version of the 68ft DODX heavy duty flat on Shapeways, so easy enough to move the heavy artillery to those and put some rubber tire stuff on the AZL cars.  |
