Budd – RDCs – They are back!

After a long hiatus, we are excited to announce the return of the Budd RDCs, and in all new road names! The first new road of the series is Trinity Railway Express. We have two road numbers available.

On the new RDC, has anything changed in the chassis, motor, electronics, etc.? I noticed the list price went up about $60 so am just curious. Also, regarding running qualities, how do the new ones run vs. the old ones. Thanks for bringing these back.

I did too up until about 2 days ago. Had a couple of urgent non-train items clean out my PayPal account but figured I'd have time to restock. It's just how things go with me.

New truck design - long story here, but running should be the same if not a little better.

The big deal is the coupler. We took the coupler from the P42 and applied the same technology to the RDC, so new tooling for that too. The coupler is body mounted, but swings quite a bit, so you should have no problem coupling multiple RDC units together. (this was a - er - challenge with the old stiff coupler) you can also couple rolling stock to the RDC without them being hurled off the rails at the first hint of a curve.

Motor is our standard 7mm 12 volt motor. Separate LED PCB at each end of the car for really nice head and tail lights. Trucks have wired leads instead of wipers for awesome electrical pick up. Same with the motor: solder wired to the PCB. The PCB is the same size as aour drop in decoder, so you can convert this to DCC easily - but you will need to solder the leads to the board. Not too hard.

Price is due to our costs going up. Not much we can do about that.

There are quite a few possibilities depending on what and when you want to model. The UP yellow is their streamliner color. In the early 1950s a number of heavyweight cars were repainted from two-tone grey and Challenger grey to augment capacity and for use on secondary routes and trains. I'm not aware of any all yellow heavyweight trains, but the possibility exists.

On the UP, passenger trains were generally pulled by "E" units, although there are references to steam-powered City of St. Louis trains with mixed heavyweight and lightweight cars as late as 1953. The engines were 4-8-4s.
The Utahn route ran E8s with mostly heavyweights into the mid-1950s.

If you want to go beyond the UP, heavyweights from both UP & SP were common on the on the San Francisco Overland in the 1950s and The City of San Francisco in the 1960s. The SP power could be E9s, PAs, F7s and even SDs.

The particular AZL choices for the sleepers ran well into the 1960s.

Whew! After a tense 24 hours, I managed to sell off enough items to get my order placed for both numbers of the TRE RDC's. So, now I can ENJOY this announcement...YAY!!!!! Thank you AZL for doing these...if you can't tell from my profile pic, these are pretty important to my Z-scale existence. :-)

I have had a few offline enquireies about previous AZL armor releases and their availability. I have checked a few dealers and both M B Klein and Z Scale Monster show that they still have stock of the 89' flats with the green and sand yellow M577 personnel carriers and M548 track cargo carriers available. The flats with the yellow bulldozers are also in stock with these dealers.

I really wanted to purchase a couple of these but you changed the scheme. Previously the sand colored military vehicles were on rttx yellow flat cars. I have already collected several sand and yellow cars and would like to add the M2A2 to my consist but those rusty brown cars will be out of place! Will you be making another release in the future with the M2A2 on yellow RTTX cars?
