A MTL GP35 would be a good choice, another good choice would be the AZL GP7. The first runs have the Swiss motors. I don't have a GP30, so I have no experience with that loco.

To shamoo737 : I think the GP35 were retired ... in 1/1 scale and z-scale too : look at MTL's home page, the only locos You can find seem to be the GP9 (without pictures ! ) and F7.
To Rob Albritton : the service center at AZL may be good ... the only problem is I am living in France ! And as You wrote, many things can happen during transportation to and from USA ... Or is there a service center (authorized dealer ? ) in France ? I don't know if Transmondia acts as a service center too !

Hi Alberich, The authorized AZL dealer in Switzerland provides service for his customers. I use his services on a regular basis. Check his web site www.zettzeit.chThere is a lot about Z scale in general, too and a fantastic link collection. Best, Sven

The other dealer I can highly recommend is Joerg Erkel from Germany. He has nearly everything in Z-scale. If you don't find it on his webpage www.1zu220-shop.dejust contact him. He has a great network and usually can organize it for you. And he loves Z-scale!! Have a look at the recent MIBA, his layout "Kallental" is presented there. Best, Sven

Thanks for Your answers. Switzerland is too complicated for me (they aren't in the EU, so the problem is about the customs), but I contacted Joerg Erkel.

The GP9 (sharing same mechanism and chassis as GP35's) is no more produced. What appears on MTL's website is spare shells. But maybe one can find some at retailers 's ... For example there are still a couple of SOO SD40-2s (unused I guess) at Zscalemonsters... Dom

I've also been happy with my GP38's. I've had hours of trouble-free operation. But I have problems recommending them knowing the problems others have had with the castings and not knowing which units come from the second (good) production run.
There are still MTL GPs out in the retail market that I can point people to. But since they're in California it's back to the credit card and customs issues that Alberich is trying to avoid.

But I have problems recommending them knowing the problems others have had with the castings and not knowing which units come from the second (good) production run. Mark, AZL62501 through AZL62512 and the undecorated GP38-2 are the part numbers from the 1st production run done at Sanda Kan / Kader / Bachmann. These did have some issues with the frames, but we have checked all the remaining locomotives that we have in stock from this run to make sure that the remaining ones we distribute will not have problems. (And of course, if there are any problems we will replace it) AZL62513 forward are the 2nd production run - done at another factory where we have had very good products produced. Best, -Rob(A) AZL

Thanks for the information, it really helps. Can you say the same for your authorized dealers? We have been checking and testing GP38-2 for quite some time (over a year) so the vast majority of inventory at dealers has been inspected twice - everything has been inspected once. There is the possibility that there are a few with dust on them that might have some issues, but if there are any problems, then we will take care of it as quickly as possible.

I have tested GP38 V2.0, and it runs smooth with good speed range. It also ran smoothly from the beginning, and it need not need a break in. This is what it should have been from the beginning.
