Or perhaps it's the Verde River bridge in AZ: as I thought the Snake River is much farther north. Actually for me, the color of the rocks and landscape tell me far more than the bridges themselves, as I mentioned in Hans' diorama thread. These images scream to me the Four Corners region of the Southwest. I also don't know how extensive BNSF usage of UP track is, I'm only aware of the two routes in California. So you may be able to place BNSF almost anywhere. Mark

They were made by Kurt Lueck, 3R Works, but long out of business. I still have some of his kits in my drawer, lucky me ;-)

As always great looking images, although the Sun seems to be getting rather low in the sky.
I would add that a coal train would be a rarity in the Bay Area. California is oil-rich and coal-poor so due to the cost of coal, oil has been the fuel of choice here for a long time.

It isn't totally wrong, it's simply a matter of where and when. WP had a motto: "Oil west of Winnemucca (Nevada)." They ran coal fired locomotives in their eastern district (Nevada and Utah), they hauled coal, just not very much into California. From my understanding the last coal trains were run in California until about 1945, supporting coal-fired ships in the Pacific war effort. I'm not aware of WP operating their Stockton (CA) coaling station past 1947.
As far as what to do with the cars, paint the loads a medium/light brown and call them sugar beets. Both SP and WP would be hauling unit trains of sugar beets this time of year: From September until about Christmas.
