Yeah, "modern" era is tough to pin down. For me it's the rise of Amtrak and the demise of the caboose, but I guess for most modelers I'm talking ancient history. Mark I would have to agree with you on that, although I never actually thought about it before...I would also perhaps add to it the end of the "covered wagons"...I remember seeing the occasional E or F unit, but then they were gone... Catt: I like the idea of modelling today, but have you ever thought about what you would do if the real world unit gets retired? Would you retire the model, start modelling yesterday, or start modelling a parallel universe?
I switched to modelling the SP as there were so few WP options out there. It felt wrong going years without buying a locomotive. My next layout I'm going to do a 220mm minimum radius, if not larger. Then maybe I can think about modelling the current era. I have been far too guilty of making miniature layouts in Z scale. I'm the reason we have truck mounted couplers. As a results I can't reliably run long equipment on my current layouts and mostly model earlier eras.
