IMHO AZL made way too few of these Sven - maybe one day I'll get one in the secondary market (without having to mortgage my house). James

James I agree - that`s why I hoped we can convince AZL to make a second run, but it looks like we could not raise enough interest here in the forum (less then 50 interest indications). Thus, we have to carefully scan the secondary market. I would love to have more of them !!! Best, Sven

Guys the real problem is that Z is just becoming too popular. Most of the brass people want were built 5-10(?) years ago and begin on the shelf since. It seems that widespread interest in them has only begun the last couple of years and they've sold out. I waited too long for the GS-4 myself so I recently picked up an AC-12.

Mark weren't you the one requesting a poll for brass locomotives? Actually no goal at all. We just put up all of our brass releases to see which was most popular. It can be based on the run, or the prototype. It is just a for fun poll. But what is interesting is the no one has voted for the Big Boys. The Challengers are the leaders. I am surprised by this based on the popularity of the Big Boys. And in case anyone is wondering, I voted for the SD45. I just loved these locomotives when they came out. I am still kicking myself for letting go of my Rio Grande SD45 to a Z scaler who was desperate to get one.... I do have a Southern high-nose version that I cherish. Rob I think we badly need another medium sized brass steam engine that can run on most layouts. While the Big Boy is really big and demands track layouts which are really big even in Z, something medium could be really useful, something bigger than a Mikado but smaller than a Big Boy. In Europe the gold standard is the BR 23 of the German Railroad (DB) era 3 - some pics attached fyi. Best, Sven

It's true that the big boy is "space and large curve" demanding but it is to me a beauty, it runs very well and I love it. I actually came back to Z scale in 2010 thanks to AZL, when the challenger was announced, and only because these large locomotives would finally come true. However, compared to the challenger and AC-12 there is indeed less details and one big "mistake" to my eyes looking at the side cylinder which is not connected to the tubings above. That is why I voted for the challenger, with hesitation with the AC-12, for their perfection. ++ Charlie

Sadly, the PA1 is the only one with out any votes... Rob I find it not fair for such a nice diesel....I couldn't get one, but I and many of us dream of it. Therefore I change my vote

The PA1 now has a vote. My favorite without question. That's why I bought two ATSF AB sets when they were released. I've never had buyer's remorse. They are great runners! ?

The AZL PA1 are hard to get on the secondary market or on EBAY. However, there is a German guy (Rolf Steinbüchel) who is doing quite a good job on the engines by Lionel. They don`t compare in quality with the AZL ones (however he uses AZL chassis for them), but they are nice to watch running as well. He is just finishing off a production run. Here are some examples: Finished engine: and the ATSF Superchief Engine (with matching cars): He is quite famous for his UP Veranda Turbines: Best, Sven

Rather odd to see a pre-1940 era EMC E1 riding on SD70's steerable trucks. Anyway we may be happy with these craftsmen who really enhance choice of stuff. Dom
