Yes, cut the nipples, and you will used the centering springs and post. You will also need to trim the tabs in the cover. The cover has to flush, and you will screw the screw into the post to hold the cover . Also don’t forget to add greas-em to the pocket.

I always dream of doing a hump yard, but the amount of real state it would take.

I can't wait!! Thanks for starting this thread and sharing your info. I'm about to start converting everything possible to MTL couplers. I would leave well enough alone but I like to do a fair amount of switching so I prefer MTL. I thought I may have been the only Z scaler using a ProtoThrottle, nice to see someone else using one! Steve W Hi Steve, Oh yeah! Protothrottle is the most suitable for American diesels. I think it's very functional for switching operation. I use Tsunami2, ESU Loksound FX as "ground decoders", they are consisting by CV19 to each Loco's onboard decorder. Of course, I know that there are small sound decorders for Z on the market, but their sounds are so tiny. This is a last resort to enjoy loud diesel sounds on Z scale.. If you have any idea for this, show me plz!

Freight cars such as 63' Greenville and Autorack have mid/long shank trucks, so some effort is required to swap couplers with MTL. While the body-mount method works, I found it suffers from unexpected coupler openings in curves. Therefore, in order to combine AZL900001 truck and MTL#905 coupler, I made two types of plastic board pieces shown in pic. Attachments:

After painting with black acrylic, each screw hole should be carefully drilled in the center position. Otherwise, the coupler knuckles will not be engaged. Attachments:

Washers are required to attach trucks with pins. Otherwise, the coupler top surface will interfere with the chassis. I'm not sure if this method is the best. I'd like to hear everyone's ideas. Attachments:

I have done it myself, but Robert Ray cut the long shank and joint it to a MTL coupler by melting the plastic.

Show me your work by pics plz!! Melting !! That's very interesting solution!! Tell me more details if you don't mind, caz I couldn't find anything about that on web. Should I use some melting knives or something?

It’s supposed to be I haven’t done it myself, but it’s been a while. I think he used a device that generates electricity to melt it. It’s in Trainboard, so you have to go through all Robert Ray’s post to find it. This is after 2003.

After hearing you and everyone's ideas, many internet reports made me realize. Coupler swap challenge was a typical topic that many veteran Z scale modelers ever had experience with. I can't find Robert's report yet, but it has helped me to find many answers to other questions. For example, turnout stalls caused by variations in wheel width. I have about 50 of AZL/MTL locos, but the MTL loco often stalls on marklin turnouts. It's not just a reduction in truck power conductivity. It is assumed that the wheels of the MTL loco are shorting out track power A/B for some reason.
Does anyone know about this issue?
