For a long time I was looking for a appropriate steam engine in daylight colours for my Texas themed layout. The May 2018 issue of the Railroad Model Craftsmen delivered a detailed story and good drawings about the 4-6-2 sunbeam of the TNO, a SP subsidary. The wonderful book about the TEXAS & NEW ORLEANS railroad by Steve Allen Goen contributed additional fotos. My plan is to build a model as close as possible ( to me) and to solve upcoming problems as they occure. Compromises my be necessary.

I started with 2 boddies of the Marklin USAR Pacific/ Micado in order to get the correct length of the engine. First step was to cut them appart: After removing the air boilers below the catwalk I could glue them together an put some reinforcement stripes behind the firebox.

Next step is the construction of the streamline fairings on the top of the boiler. The metall sheets on both sides are brought into shape, filled with epoxy and covered with another sheet. The openig for the top screw will be covered later. Story will becontinued

With the side scirts installed, the engine comes closer to its original. To enhance the driving mechanism, I changed the the 3- or 5 pole motor into a can motor which gives mor room for a dcc decoder.

The can motor itself is slimmer as the original one. But I had to saw off some portion of the surrounding bracket, as the boiler is longer now. I should mention that you have to make some adjustments on the original driving shaft by shortening one end. But it is easily done. Attachments:

Now it´s time to make the first steps at the tender. I used a styrene plate as the basis in order not to built the tender too heavy. The trucks are part of a Westmodel kit, sold by aspen models. I prefere metal trucks as they give a deeper weight basis for the model and I can use them for additional power pickup. Of cours, you have to be carefull with the polarity of the wheelsets. For the main body of the Vanderbuit tender I used a appropriate brass tube. I drilled some holes in it,to accomodate the power wires and the mounting screws for the trucks.

In combination with the engine it gives already an impression how it should look at the end. Attachments:

The scirting on the front is still missing. Handrails as well. Painting might become delicate. No real clue how to make boxpok drivers . The trailing truck needs a better suspension outside ( sparepart from AZL Mikados?). But all in all, I´m content with my "close enough" loco so far.

Painting by hand is really delicate! The pipes on the boiler make it impossible to use a masking tape. Most of the decals are still missing. Attachments:

hello, you may use pigment pens with a 0.7mm point; it is easier than a brush on these tiny things. but the colors could not match
POSCA pens are really good
