Hi fellow Zetties So my long unexecuted plan for a Barge Layout is coming closer. I started testing various configurations and came up with a simple plan that allows operations of up to 3 different trains including storage. Since I wanted to highlight to Barge, the train operartions itself is more of a "Bonus", nice thing is the Barge offers free storage that I do not have to hide. The area is somehwere in British Columbia.. there is very limited traffic on the line and short trains. However.. passenger service is provided by a daily RDC. At a later time, a true "bastard" engine from a fictious logging line will also find a home..
Dimensions; 90cm x 50cm (so it fits on top of my furniture), mostly Rokuhan track, DC operation, all on piece of Foam insulation.
Since I'm more of an artist than Modelrailroader.. I hate bare styrofoam..so after setting up track I gave the board a quick shot with acrylic paint, including the water. Here are a couple of shots.

Great idea! Where did you find the barge? I always have loved that idea of representing barge traffic on a layout.

Very well executed ! We hate bare flat foam too. And the “plywood plains”. The water depth illusion was done right. Your true Artist does show.

Thanks for the kind words The Barge, Tug as well as the Bridge and Piers are 3D printed on my little printer.(I printed everything from buildings to freight cars...) All the files are from Thingiverse, most of them are in N scale so I just scaled them down. The barge is of a modular design and assembles pretty much like Lego. The lenght can be varied by adding more or less elements and end pieces. Track is just ACC'd on the printed Barge, and is one piece with the Approach, which is made out of wood. This allows for smooth ops, but leaves the Barge permanently moored.
(There are now even steel versions of the Approach on the above source).
I am currently waiting for the remainng Rokuhan track to arrive, as most of my locos do not like the Marklin curved switches, so the focus is on starting some Landscaping. Those *China* Trees are just mockups for now.. I will spruce them up later.. BR Boris

Very reminiscent of the barge service that ran in San Pablo bay between Richmond,CA and the NWP dock in Tiberon. . The operation ran at least into the mid-1970s and was worth the attention when stopped in traffic on the bridge.

I saw a sequence where a German Modeller RC'ed a HO ferry "on wheels", he used a former Viking HO RC Firetruck (proportional). Revell Control makes mini cars for about 12 Euros, unfortunately they are not proportional ; but I think it should be possible to "hack" them, slowing them down enough ... It's just so a mad idea !

Hi Sven and fellow Zetties Thanks for the encouragement and support.
Actually I was inspired by the WP car float of Sven, and finding 3D Files was the kickstart after having repainted the Geep and ordered the SW1200 I hope to have the remaing track pieces by next week. In the meantime the 3D printer is kept busy with details like a lighthouse, bridge piers and such.( and Gondolas)..

Boris, Just picked up this thread. Your barge layout is looking good! Nice little layout. The printer sure is coming in handy.

Scott Thanks Scott The printer is really practical.. wouldn't wanna miss it.. even if it's just for printing simple things like LED stripe holders or Lizards to spice up office trees. The layout proceeds slow but steady. Will post updates, BR Boris

Welcome to the crazy Zetties bunch. My barge layout construction has come to a halt since I to switch priorities with taking care of my Dad and organising the move to a retirement home. I found out that the designer who has the Barge 3Dfiles on Thingiverse also now has the complete approach files.. so you could fulfill your dream. A NYC Barge Layout will be an interesting project.. good luck🙏🏻👍🏼 Neither AZL nor my 3D printed SW1000 likes " buckles" in track, so I mostly use GP9 for moving trains on and off the barge. BR Boris

Hi fellow Zetties
I will stop work on the " rural area" Barge Layout in favor of a small City scene where a modified Barge loading will be used. All of the " old stuff" is safeley tucked away. Who knows☺️.
My 3D printing skills have improved.. and the creator if the Barge files has done updates and added items like a steel Apron.
So stay tuned. BR Boris
