Hello friends, my Amtrak California train had a bad accident and one of the F59's trucks broke. I fixed it with superglue, still the engine doesn't run smoothly anymore but this truck's wheels keep stuttering. I guess that some of the glue is responsible for this. Does anyone of you know, if there is the F59's truck is available as a spare part? I really don't want to replace the whole loco. Cheers from Germany, Lutz

I don't know if a single F59PHI truck is available. But, since the Amtrak California loco has black trucks, you could buy any of the clearance F59PHI's for $69 for parts. (equivalent to the price of a pair of GP38-2 trucks in AZL's parts section.) That would give you yet another spare set of trucks, an entire spare frame/mech/motor, etc. EDIT: Or for another $6 you can get an actual Amtrak California one...it is Used but just one other option for you. www.ztrackresale.com/locomotives/azl-locomotives/azl-f59phi-6001-3

I have been thinking of one of these sets. I notice one car has horns on it. I suppose it is to run push-pull. Does the headlights light up when running with it in the lead? Cant seem to find much on these sets.

Cant seem to find much on these sets. Yes the prototype is a push/pull setup, and the car with the horn/headlights is called a "Cab Control Car". AZL's model does NOT come with working headlights, however.

I added wheel-wipers to the trucks and ran ultrafine brass wire up through the bolster pin so it had no effect on truck tracking. Put a 4- function Decoder so have the two white driving lights (with ditch light function) and red lights for the forward running.
Then, I popped out the window glazing and cut the right forward side window. Then placed an engineer ‘on a seat’, leaning out of the window waving his hand.
In the Cab, there is extremely little space, especially the front nose. I made a thin circuit board with White and Red LED’s (plus resistors) to align with the Ditch and reverse running lights. Ran wires betest the motor frame back to the 4 function decoder in the tray.

I just checked out AZL Direct and see F59PHI West five car sets (loco and four cars) for $99? Is that right? I'd purchase a set (or two) just to have one at that price... Of course what I really want is a Commuter Rail set but that would be $433 for a five car train. So I wonder if there is something "wrong" with the F59 set...

Nice job lighting you car Jeff. You make it sound easy! I really need to try my hand at this. After having some lighted cars, like a Marklin Push/Pull train I have, or even just working tail end lights, I really like that type of feature.

Yep, correct. I don’t know a pix anymore. I made note to look up when I get back in 3 weeks in Germany.

Thanks All for the response. I too saw they were 99$ for the sets at AZL Direct, so that peaked my intrest. I model New England mostly, but a Sounder set would not look out of place on my small layout..

So I wonder if there is something "wrong" with the F59 set... Not so much a matter of something being wrong. More the issue that they missed the mark on production numbers. The sets do have their idiosyncrasies but overall they are nice and the locos run extremely well. This is actually how I got into Z-Scale. These sets first went on clearance back in early 2015 and the late Johnathan "Catt" Edwards tipped me off and pushed me into trying my hand at Z. Bought two sets, some Rokuhan track, and a handful of other items to test the waters. I loved it, and proceeded to sell off my massive N collection to go full bore into Z.
