I may have missed something, but in reading through the coupler compatibility thread and the related links, I found procedures to many options but not the one I interested in.
What is needed to change an AZL steamliner to Marklin or Marklin style couplers? I would like to use AZL passenger cars with some of my Marklin locomotives and do not want to change the couplers on the locomotive (or tender). I would most likely make AZL RPO or baggage cars into conversion cars and only change the coupler on one end.
Thank you.

Welcome to the forum.
The easiest way I know is either the the 959MA or 963MA trucks from Micro-trains. The monster site has them in stock.

Hello, I just don't want to open a new thread when there's a similiar one already in existence. Well, still my case is the other way. I have this old Märklin ATSF Passenger train set, they sold decades ago (1980s?). I pimped the Märklin F7 A-A locos with five anchor motors, equipped tired wheels and whired the engines to improve electrical uptake. However, Märklin's F7s were designed in the 1970s, so is their exterior und interior design. And if you have ever had an AZL loco running smoothly on your layout.... Ok, my question is how to get AZL's ATSF F7 to pull Märklin's ATSF passenger cars. Are there any spare parts with Märklin compatible couplers? I checked the Monster site, but I am not sure, if one of those MTL truck will fit under a AZL F7 A or at least a (dummy) F7B. Does anyone of you have an idea? Cheers from Germany, Lutz
Edit: Two ideas just popped up in my mind: 1. I could use a MTL passenger car, equipped with a Märklin style coupler on one truck only, as some kind of adaptor car between AZL loco and Märklin trainset. Unfortunately, MTL doesn't have ATSF passenger cars, do they? 2. I do have two AZL GP38s sold by Märklin over here with Märklin style couplers already mounted to the trucks. Now, if the trucks of the GP38 are compatible with F7, I could exchange a truck. But I am not sure at all, if they are compatible.
What do you think?

The microtrains baggage car as an intermediate would be suitable, but the last time they were available was 2016 as part of a set of baggage, coach and 2 sleepers, so you would have to strike lucky on the secondhand market. Alternatively a “head-end” express boxcar may do the trick. A double door 50’ green one is still available, 506 00 341/2.You will need 956M as the replacement truck with Maerklin coupler needed to convert. If you prefer, you could probably get away with the grey version 506 00 191/2 which might not be so obtrusive between silver loco and silver passenger cars.

Hello oldgrog, thanks for your answer! Yes I think I remember MTL having ATSF passenger cars, but I couldn't find any on the internet. A baggage car as intermediate would be fantastic. Well, an express box car would do fine until a better solution comes up. I checked out AZL's website and couldn't find any differences between GP38 and F7 trucks. So they should be exchangable. And I found out, that Märklin sells single couplers that fit into the trucks of the AZL locos they sell here (E8, GP38). The price for one small coupler is enormous, nearly 20 bugs. But if that fits into the coupler box of the F7 truck as well, it's woth it. Cheers, Lutz

I tried using a microtrains passenger truck on an AZL Santa Fe baggage car, but the heights were all wrong and coupling with a Maerklin coach was not secure.

I removed the Marklin coupler from the truck of the Marklin passenger car by removing the cover on the coupler box and replacing the coupler with a MTL #902 short shank coupler.

Hello & thank you verymuch for your answers!
@thom: Actually I have these here. I guess they're quite complicated to be installed into a Märklin box with this tiny metal finger and the spring and then to use a soildering tool to close the box again? I do have two AZL GP38s, one sold by AZL with an AZL coupler, one sold by Märklin with their couplers. I also had ordered Märklin's spare couplers für GP38s (see above). But the don't fit in by heigth and width. Maybe you can see in the attached picture, that AZL's box for the Märklin coupler ist some micrometers bigger. Unfortunately the spare part for the whole truck is sold out at Märklin's spare part shop. I will now try to get one of those through other dealers, who might still have it in stock. As a workaround for the meantime, I got a nice MTL baggage car in silver SP livery. It looks quite similar to the ATSF version. For this, a truck with an already installed Märklin coupler is easily availabe. Well, shipping and customs are quite more than the price for the truck, but that's the way it goes, I guess. Cheers! Lutz
