Is it safe to say you’ll be tooling GP40-2 after this since it would only require a new walkway and fuel tank design and you have the chassis and car body done?
Will you be doing a early Union Pacific scheme on the SD40-2? I would like to see both the early scheme to run with my 1980s era and the more modern schemes to run with my 2000’s era.

Yes. These large-types will have the same Decoder ready frame.

Some artistic inspiration for those who are putting together the SD40-2 run (seen yesterday online):

Hi Hans,
I looked back through the posts and did not see the question previously... I may have missed it...
Will the SD40T-2 (tunnel motor) version that were made for SP, D&RGW, and Cotton Belt be released in the 2nd run?
I believe that these road names have quite a few modelers and collectors in the community!
Thanks, Mark

The SD40T-2 is a completely different locomotive from the SD40-2. Different length, wheelbase, the whole 9 yards.
I have no idea what AZL's plans are, but I would be very surprised if tunnel motors were remotely part of the SD40-2 schedule.
Don't get me wrong....I would love to see tunnel motors, I just don't think they fit into a traditional SD40-2 release. I do believe that one of the principals of AZL fancies SP though, so it wouldn't surprise me to see them eventually. (*again* that is, as I understand they did brass versions years ago)

SP tunnel motors would be great. If one of the AZL principals is interested in SP it's an iconic locomotive that is needed! But I do agree that it is different enough that it would likely be a stand alone release.

Then UP inherited them all, as well as all the lease units later on.

Rio Grande as well, loved they're SD40T-2's! I don't know how similar GP40's are to SD40's, but I'm hoping that somewhere down the road, there will be some Rio Grande GP40's, since Rio Grande seemed to have quite a few of those.

As mentioned in this blog, the Tunnel Motors are too different from the regular SD40-2. Thus not part of the SD40-2 family run. It would have to be a separate run and one that I personally like. For sure a future project. With any locomotive comparison, check the truck center distance first. That will quickly tell you if one can produce different locomotives for lower costs. A couple of inches will not matter much in Z scale, but a half a foot will
