Based on the initial alleged roadnames, I'm in for 6 or 7 probably depending on schemes. (1) BN Stripes (1) BN Whiteface (1-2) BNSF Heritage 1 (1) ATSF (1) UP (1) NS (Early) ...and could probably be talked into a BNSF Swoosh as well.

I wonder which CP version we'll see. MTL did at least three four different versions.

AZL generally isn't very secretive about progress, particularly when they set up a thread for a project. I refer you to the last post: azlforum.com/post/20863 which puts them receiving mechanical drawings for review only about now and product by Christmas.

When MTL released their SD 40-2's in 2012 then again in 2018, was there a noticeable difference in operation ?
Did they make both DB and NON-DB versions ?
Looks like AZL will release most of the road names MTL did.

I had both, and it seemed to me that the older run was much slower, (read: almost too slow for most people's liking, although to me they were perfect) versus the newer run was very comparable to current AZL locos.
MTL did not make non-DB versions. It does appear that AZL has an impressive number of options planned including DB/non-DB.
The roadname overlap is to be expected. There are schemes that are simply more popular by virtue of number of prototypes, popularity of the railroad, etc. So it makes sense to "follow the money" so to speak. There will likely be some variations though....see the list above, and mention of ensuing runs with even more variety. And things like variations on respective railroads' schemes. For example, BN had a large roster of SD40-2's and a lot of variety both in details and in schemes like the "whiteface" scheme they applied to many locos starting in the late 1980's. Even UP had some varied schemes...almost every major railroad has/had a few different paint jobs to choose from.

DB = dynamic brakes. Kept wondering what the Deutsche Bundesbahn had to do with American diesel locomotives.
