I'm new to the forum and starting to enjoy Z scale. I've recently acquired a Noch briefcase layout, so I will be adding AZL products to the roster soon.

Welcome, from another Doug in Z. There are plenty of knowledgeable folks around here in case you need assistance. You can't go wrong with AZL.

Doug,
Welcome to the forum. For starting out, may I suggest looking into the shorter products: F3 or GP38 locomotives and 40 ft boxcars, hoppers and such. The briefcase layouts have the tighter curves and some of the larger rolling stock may not play well.

Thanks for the welcome; Doug and Mark.
My only Z scale unit so far, is a Marklin F3 SP Daylight and its passenger cars from the 1980's. You're absolutely correct Mark, for the longer passenger cars do not like the tighter radius of the inside loop, but run well on the outside loop of the "Meran" briefcase layout. I'm considering the AZL WP GP7, WP 40'AAR Boxcar 4-car set and a WP Caboose, for the inside loop.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Hi
Im a new member too, with lots of what seem to be dumb questions.
Ive got a AZL California Zephyr set with MTL ABBA F7. Trying largest radius, 270mm,I can find for a simple oval, will add turnout to form yard on one side Any chance of lighting the cars ? Ive looked, but nothing popped out to me

Hi Phil,
Welcome to the group.
Yes the CZ is a very nice set. The MTL F7 are actually freight units. you can tell by the nose art. So you may want to consider at least an AZL F3A. I'm looking into lighting my set, but the wheel wipers that would need to be added to get power into the cars would put a lot of drag on the locomotives. Not sure it's worth it with the tinted windows, except possibly the domes. I'll be posting when I know more.

Thanks Mark
Your right, I am looking at the AZL F3's. I really like the black body, yellow stripe units (early scheme). But first im buying some drgw heavyweight passenger cars.
Id like to fit batteries and a magnetic switch inside the cars, because then no added drag and constant lighting, but not sure everything would fit. Any idea on how to open a car so i can see how how space I do have? Ive got a lighting guy who seems prettyhelpful
Again glad to meet you
Phil

Phil,
For most AZL cars, the shells is press fit to the chassis and can be pried off with a tooth pick. The notable expection are the heavyweights, where the roof pries off.
Because of the interiors, I don't think there is much room in the cars for a battery, but I haven't taken any measurements. Please post your results if you do. A battery will add a bit of drag due to the increase weight of the car but I think it would be less than wipers.

Mark We’ve got a member, here on the forum, in development of a capacitor designed for z-scale (long and thin). I’ve been looking at the new design GPS-97 wipers. Between the two, track power may just work...

Hey web master: could we move this to a new thread "Lighting cars"? This is quickly becoming too interesting to lose under the "New Member" thread.
Mark
Rob, Thanks.
