Besides putting your loco and cars back in the jewel cases or letting them rattle around in a box, what are you all doing for ready storage? I lined my storage drawer temporarily with cleaning cloths with wood strips to create rows, but would like something more substantial that fine details will not snag on.

I keep some of mine on a wall display shelf. I pick up a 10 shelf unit 4 foot long from Showcase express years ago before their prices went crazy. It will hold 90 MTL Cars in their boxes, or way more if not in boxes.

If you're keeping them "laid out" in drawers, you might want to look at tool box drawer liners. They come in varring thicknesses of rubber. I've seen some mechanics use carpet or even thicker rubber cut to fit the drawers for more padding. Or you could just use soft wood like balsa to form your rows.
I've also seen some mechanics cut out foam to fit around their power tools but that's probably not a good idea for delicate parts.

This might be a different topic, but what have people done for portable storage, such as being able to carry cases of locomotives and rolling stock to shows?

I have a three-phased approach. Cars/locos are either: 1. In their original jewel cases, stored in clear plastic boot boxes from Container Store. (they fit...barely...under the bed) 2. In my wall display. (see below) 3. (coming soon) stored in modified TrainboxesPlus N-Scale box. This would be the "loose storage/train show" option. The inserts for the Trainboxes plus come two ways...three slots per section (3 sections per tray, 3 trays per box) or two. The three slot version is about perfect for loose Z cars sitting upright. (versus wheels down for the N cars) The two slot version is about right to hold Z jewel cases, which would be locos for shows, some key rolling stock. I have a few of these from when I was in N, and my goal is to cut them down ".727272" of the N width. I will have some cars that will likely stay in these always, like some Shapeways stuff and things like the MTL Circus cars that either come in cheap blister packs or won't fit back in the case with customizations and/or loads. I'm not 100% this will be a success, either...but that's the plan. Here's a pic of the wall display:

For portable storage i have a few of these show cases 6,7, and 10 section trays work best. I also use the cheap harbor freight tool cases and make the storage trays for them myself. I used two layers of 1/16 inch sheet packing foam glued together for the bottom, Then cut 1/2 foam into strips and glue to the bottom in rows, lastly I added the mid pieces to protect the couplers and keep the cars from sliding into each other. By making them yourself you can make the rows and dividers whatever size you want. The one in the bottom of the case with 9 rows, 6 cars wide was the first one i made its about 6 years old now and still holding up great. Each case will hold 4 trays (5 if you pull the egg crate foam out of the top) Taking these pictures reminds me, my 3rd tray is almost full. I guess it's time to start making the 4th tray. Just think 4 trays with 54 cars each = a 216 Hopper train all in one box, I might need to use all 3 of my GP9's to pull that many. Attachments:

Here is what I did and it works really well is is not that expensive. I bought the items at a website called gemsondisplay.com. under trays and liners I bought 1" stackable trays and the liners for bracelets or necklaces. And for travel I bought this side loading case that holds 25 trays. when going to shows I just put a sheet of bubble wrap on top of the cars to keep them from shifting.

While at home I had this built to hold all my trains over the top yes it is, but it makes pulling out and putting away a breeze holds on avg 20 cars a tray
