I’d like discussing the 50s and 60s at least from a Northern California aspect if others are interested. I would also like to hear about other areas of the country as I only got east and south of Denver once and never east of the Mississippi. I grew up in the 60s in the Ohio railroad mecca of Marion, Ohio, in the heyday of the Erie Lackawanna. I remember many a wait at the crossings watching a number of box cars of numerous roads from across the country. I loved seeing the various schemes and colors, Rock Island, the UP, Penn Central, Santa Fe, the good ‘ol EL diamond, etc. It was like virtual surfing the world, prior to the internet. The area was truly a RR fan’s dream, with the NW, EL, C&O, Penn Central passing through, plus a number of pool locos from roads like Burlington and Milwaukee Road. Also, a number of the old auto carriers passing through.

Gerd, Your articulation looks really good with a prototypical spacing. How does it perform? I’d be interested in the minimum radius in particular.

Hi Mark, articulation yes, but no bellow, I have drawn up a bellow and experimenting with flexible 3D print, but need a bit more time. At the moment I leave the cars just having that little cap and the illusion by painting the inside ends black. Actually not noticeable when you look from a distance. Haven't tried any minimum radius yest, but 235mm should work.

Gerd, Thanks for the information. I’ve been trying to build a duplex coach like the ones common on the SP that would run on 220 or even 195 mm curves. So far.. the best I can do is 240mm. I’m thinking about a bolster plate with a spiral slot that would force the cars farther apart on tighter curves.
I would love to know how it was done on AZL’s brass and the performance of the cars. Also if you get your bellows working, I’d like to hear more.
I return you now to the freight cars... Mark,
