ATSF SD40-2 3D View.pdf (241.43 KB) Here is a 3D view of a revised ATSF SD40-2. Not 100% done, but fun to watch work in progress. Since we first got the initial drawings many corrections have been done. Some include locomotive height, fuel tank size, radiator fan details, truck redesign and battery box size. The SD40-2 variations are now starting to add up: -Phases (1 or 2) -Headlight position -Nose Brake (Rachet or Wheel) -Dynamic Brake option -Dynamic Brake Bulge option -Bell position -Cab windows -Cab Sunshades -2 different Snowplows -Fuel Tank size options -Different Roof Antennas and Equipment -Beacon Light option -Airhorn options -Airhorn placement options -Radiator styles (Open Grid or Corrugated) -Different Cooling Fans -Roof AC option -Bay Window option -Winterization Hatch option -Ditch light option -Ditch light placement -Marker Lights option -Blower Housing (two styles) -Exhaust Silencer option -Anticlimbers options -Trucks (HT-C or 3 axle Flexicoil) -Nose lengths differences -Pilot differences (not yet agreed with factory) and probably a few more details.......

With about 4000 locomotives built some railroads had 100s SD40-2. And they differed. So identifying SD40-2 railroad specific specs that are identical are crucial. The work gets a little harder when we research secondary users and late life engines.
Now we made quite a few brass SD40-2 in 2003 so we can reuse old files? Answer is no.

Confirmed from the factory that tooling have started. Maybe our most complex project to date. No date on the first plastic. Will keep the Forum updated when we know

We still do not have the first plastic, but it should not be far away. Sorry, no early release SD40-2

Factory update. We are expecting the first plastic at the end of March. Normally this translates to 6-9 months before delivery.

A quick note on the CP SD40-2. First paint scheme is Packman. Units will be from the 5600 series which were made by EMD, not GMD

Just heard from our factory. They are injecting the first plastic at the moment and we should have samples in about 10 days time. Will be happy to share the locomotive parts with the Forum

Sorry that we are late reporting on the SD40-2 progress. Hit a snafu that we are currently working on. Our plan was always to use a body mounted coupler, but this solution is probably not going forward. So we are reengineering to the proven truck mounted coupler used on our ES44AC and SD70ACe locomotives. Will post photos of the locomotives in a couple of weeks.

Hi, Just moved this thread. So the reengineering will delay the project, but hopefully we can make up the lost time later. Wish we could have done without since many parts will have to be redone. Two different set of trucks and at least 4 different frames. Then some new pilot parts will have to be added as well. Hopefully we do not have to alter the ditch lights parts and anti climbers.
