I am a new Z Scaler (May 2019). My goal is to scratch build all of my layout buildings, using various materials, such as: Paper, Cardstock, Balsa, Basswood and Styrene. I’ve been working on developing a building process and working out details such as windows, doors, walls, roofs and trim. The scale itself has been a challenge for me, and after actually building a few buildings, finally made one with the properly proportioned windows and doors. My layout 22”x36” Rokuhan track, AZL locos, various equipment. The layout is based on a Santa Fe branch in the wine country of California and will feature a Vineyard and Winery as the main focus, as well as a small village. I’ve been enjoying my new Z Scale hobby (after almost 60 years of Lionel, HO, and N) since May, and I can honestly say that I have never enjoyed model railroading as much as I am now. It has been so much fun working on my layout and for the better part of 8 weeks, on creating my buildings. i had a rough start in Z Scale, with my first locomotive and track from Micro-Trains. You may remember my many posts about the issues that I was experiencing early on. But with the many suggestions and guidance from many of you as well as some encouragement from local Z Scale modelers, I switched to AZL locomotives and Rokuhan track and have not looked back. I have also been following a number of good Facebook Groups, which have been extremely helpful. Anyway, happy modeling!

Starts small and the next time you look, there is a community. Great start!
Join us BAZ BoyZ (Bay Area Z) at the Great Train Show: Sacramento, Jan 4-5 @ Cal Expo San Jose, Feb 22-23 @ Santa Clara County Fairgrounds. We have 12 Z-Bend Track based modules for about 15 scale miles of track. We run DCC with 100+ car freight trains and many passenger trains, including the Capital Corridor.

Nice little structure! Scratch building is one of my personal favorite parts of the hobby. It sounds like you have a good direction for your first layout, with good, reliable equipment to operate it with. I would love to see it as it progresses. Thanks for sharing.

A Christmas gift to myself: a cheapo Chinese K40 laser cutter / engraver. I've been impressed with how far cardstock building have come and wanted to try my hand at it. It's great for building some iconic structures on my Gotthard layout: 1) get pictures from as many sides as possible on the web ( Google street view is great for this) 2) manipulate in Adobe photoshop and illustator to make them "head on" flat shots - see picture 3) outline where the laser should cut 4) build the kit OK, that makes it sound too easy. Reality is TONS of trial and error to make the first building: power and speed of movement of the laser for various materials and thicknesses. How to layer various cardstock and paper to make it look realistic. How to print reverse images, and then align them on the laser for a perfect cut. etc. etc. BUT I'm pretty happy with how things are turning out ... so far!
